About Luna

Adoption Fee: $100
Border Collie mix
Age: Puppy
Sex: Female

Meet Luna. She is a 7 month old, 25 lbs (ish) Border Collie Mix (we've been told) with the cutest fox ears and curly tail. She is healthy and not yet spayed. We can discuss getting her spayed before she finds her new home. She's a real smart athletic girl who learns astoundingly fast. She already knows a bunch of basic commands including sit, down, wait, break, leave it, drop, fetch, up, off, place, spin, lets go, go potty, find it, touch/boop, paw. She also knows how to get her toys and squeak them if you ask. She is in the process of learning heel and quiet. Luna is the happiest playing tug, fetch (she is so fast!) and running on the beach which she does every day as we live right near the bay. She loves splashing in the water, digging in the sand and has pretty great off leash recall with a particular whistle. She gets bored easily so a good toy rotation and lots of different types of enrichment are a must. At home she is crate, pen and is house trained. She likes making new friends when she is in her space and quickly takes to new people who approach her slowly and let her meet them halfway. On her terms, she likes belly rubs, back massages, leaning against you, standing hugs (she initiates) and trying to fit on your lap. Being on the couch is her favorite though she rarely sits still for long. She is very food motivated and a bit spoiled with treats but she will repay you in hugs around the waist and licks. Her favorite treats are Orijen dehydrated treats, Kiwi liver treats, frozen yogurt cups and chicken breast. She's great at food puzzles, really taken to Kongs lately and loves lick mats as well. She is vocal and has specific barks for each thing she wants. She is very communicative and if you pay attention, she will tell you what she needs. She very much appreciates a response to her requests and carefully listens to what you say. That said, she does have a few challenges. She is sensitive to outside noises on walks and reaches her threshold really quickly with loud cars (she's ok with ones moving slowly), approaching dogs, people and scooters etc. She can be reactive and will fear bark and jump at dogs, cars or people when she gets beyond her limit. She has come a long way with training and can make it through walks but she gets home dysregulated and grouchy afterward and has to be left alone to calm down. She is also not a fan of all the noises in our condo complex. She fear barks at the front door when neighbors pass by or when she hears them coming and going. Which leaves her frequently stressed. Smoky smells from cooking also scare her and she goes into her crate and hides. All of this makes our home a scary place for her and ultimately is the reason we feel we need to rehome her so that she can live somewhere she feels safe. When she is stressed she does not like being touched at all. This makes it difficult to take her harness off (putting it on is not an issue). She will growl or snark at you when she doesn't want to be touched. She also is grouchy waking up from naps and needs some space to come around. Another struggle she has is resource guarding. She will lunge and air snap if the cat approaches her pen while she has something special (toys, treats, food or something random she found on a walk). We have made great progress with her guarding with us and can walk past while she is eating. We have also had success with management by feeding her outside on the patio. She is willing to trade for something better if we need to take something away from her. We think Luna would do best in a home with an experienced owner who has dealt with dogs who resource guard and have other sensitivities. She would love a big, quiet yard with a little pool to splash in where there are no scary cars or people. She can be fearful of dogs and will bark at them. We socialized her early on in puppy classes but didn't get comfortable in that environment. We have, however, seen her attempt to play with the most docile older dog who didn't approach her or react to her at all so I don't think it would be impossible for her to live in a home with another dog but it would need to be carefully managed. She is not right for a home with small children or anyone who can't be aware of her moods. We know she would be an amazingly loyal and loving companion for someone who appreciates her strengths and talents. She is truly a special dog who deserves to live her best joyful, silly, puppy life.
