About Mater

Chihuahua / Beagle
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE BIO ON THIS DOG BEFORE REQUESTING AN APPLICATION. MANY OF OUR DOGS HAVE STRICT REQUIREMENTS FOR THEIR ADOPTION. 2-year-old male chihuahua/beagle mix, about 29 pounds. Mater was found abandoned on a distant country road. He and two other dogs were dumped off and left to fend for themselves. Mater, being as smart as he is, was the only one left alive after two weeks of living on the side of the road. He evaded being trapped for quite some time. But eventually decided that food in the trap was better than starvation. Mater came to us VERY fearful and avoidant. Rightly so! While he was never mean, aggressive or bitey (never even offered that behavior), he stayed huddled by himself and avoided touch for quite some time. His ever-persistent foster gave him all the time he needed and one day, he 'tried'. That was a good day! Fast forward a year and a half and two fosters working super hard, and you would never know Mater was so afraid and shut down! I'm Mater! I'm a super sweet, easy-going, and gentle dog who does not bark or bite or lunge or jump! Because I am quiet, apartments and condos would be OK! When you leave the house for work or errands though, I would prefer to be in my crate as it makes me feel safe. It also keeps me from the occasional urge to mark my territory. Other than that, I'm low maintenance and don't have any separation anxiety. I'm very bright, and well-mannered. I am leash-trained (I can heel on command) and I am great at the dog park. I really like other dogs, I'm very amicable with all sizes, breeds and genders. If someone wants to play too rough though, I will run away. I am now comfortable with new people (adults/children), even though I'm a bit shy for the first few minutes. Once I know you, I'm a total love bug who wants to hug and kiss you. I don't chase squirrels or birds, but if I see another dog while I'm on my walk, I will cry a little bit because I want to meet and play with them! My foster parents taught me to sit/lie down/give a kiss/shake and sit up on my hind legs, all in a matter of 2 months, so keep teaching me more stuff as I love to learn! Two of my favorite places are the couch or in bed with my person. I'm a sound sleeper who doesn't move much at night. During the day, I love a long walk and a game of fetch. Chew toys are a great way to keep me occupied. Sometimes I might think your socks or shoes are chew toys, so you will have to teach me which items are the ones I can play with! I do enjoy car rides but am still working on my motion-sickness. Some of my very favorite vacations are at a beach or a lake! If I'm not waist-deep into the water and biting at the waves, I'm prancing and bouncing along the shoreline. I get so excited when I see the water that I cry with joy, even though I'm not a swimmer. I do shed a little, but my coat is very short, so you don't notice it much. I like to wear my sweater in the winter because I do get cold. I would do best in a house with someone who can take me on at least one longer walk and 3-4 shorter walks per day! I would not mind a house with a fence and other dogs to play with. I will ignore cats and don't mind older respectful children. Adoption contract and fee applies. All adoptable dogs can be met at adoption events hosted every weekend. For a list of scheduled events go to: https://www.facebook.com/SmidgetRescue/events . Smidget Rescue is not a shelter, and dogs cannot be seen at the Rescue location. All dogs are fostered throughout the Puget Sound area and are brought to the events where they can be met by prospective adopters. Additional pictures of adoptable dogs can be seen at: https://www.facebook.com/SmidgetRescue/photos_stream?tab=photos_albums. All adoptable dogs are spayed or neutered at 6 months of age or older. Puppies are adopted with a refundable spay/neuter deposit (in addition to the adoption fee) and adopters are required to get their puppy to our vet for their pre-scheduled spay-neuter appointments. APPLICATIONS CAN BE OBTAINED BY EMAIL ONLY. Adoption process includes application, meet & greet, home visit and reference check. Email Jamie at [email protected] or click on the CONTACT link on this page. PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS BEFORE SENDING. We get a fair number of incorrect emails and Jamie is not able to contact potential adopters. Notice: We do not ship dogs out of state. You must live within a three-hour radius of Seattle, WA, (such as Portland, Vancouver B.C., etc.), so we can arrange for a home visit. If your home seems like a great fit for the dog you would like to adopt, you must then drive to meet the dog at one of our weekend events or at the fosters home.
