About Chester

Chester is an 8-year-old, ~50 pound, coonhound looking for a forever home in which to rest is head, and a person to help him be his best self. He is a love and just wants to be loved, and he's ready to be your shadow if you're 'hiring.' While he's not super cuddly or a giver of kisses, he'd gladly lay at your feet or sit next to you on the couch to keep you company. He'll rest his head on your lap and accept all the belly rubs and doggy massages you're willing to give him while he's at it. While his love language may not be snuggling, he's fluent in treats! Like his other coonhound friends, Chester LOVES treats and food A LOT. He doesn't discriminate at all when it comes to food. That hound nose is always working and can sometimes land him in trouble, as he won't hesitate to eat your entire plate of food when you turn your back and can also get a bit jumpy trying to get to a tasty plate. Chester's also been known to run off in search of his next snack. Because he can be a wanderer, he needs a home where doors and gates don't get left open. The temptation to explore is just too great for this hound dog. That said, he's excellent on the leash and enjoys walks in the woods. More of a forest fella than a beach bum, since he doesn't like to swim. Chester does well with children and other animals, including cats and bunnies (he likes to sniff them �٪� ) and is largely indifferent unless they're eating something he wants! Because he's so food motivated, Chester is easy to teach simple commands like sit, high five, lay down. He's not big on toys or fetch, but he'll get the occasional zoomie or enjoy a Kong-especially if peanut butter's involved! Chester has a typical hound voice, so apartment living and sound-sensitive folks probably won't work for this boy. He barks pretty often, especially to let you know when visitors are approaching the home! He's got that trademark coonhound howl, too. It's been known to travel from one end of Petco to the other during a routine nail trimming-which he much prefers professionally done, than performed at home. While Chester is great about not chewing or destroying things, he should be crated when you're away or he will potty in the house. The good news is, he does great in a crate at night and when he's alone in the home. While this sweet guy has some common coonhound 'quirks,' he also has a lot of unconditional love to give.
