About Bean

Chihuahua mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

[Read About Natural Incontinence Care] Bean is at the Napa Shelter and should be available any day. (We adopted him from the shelter with the understanding there weren't any behavioral issues - he has quite a few and was most likely abused in his original home). Bean is a sweet and affectionate dog - with his family. He is more open to meeting women than men however he doesn't really like new people. His fear and uncertainty comes out as aggression. He really doesn't like children; he growls and barks at our daughter's female friends, even while they sit quietly and gently toss him treats, and has tried to bite my nephew who was sitting quietly next to me. The kids haven't been aggressive or provocative; he just doesn't like kids. He has excellent hearing and will bark at everything to ensure your safety. He's high stress and doesn't like to be alone. He gets along with our other small dog (who was already in the home when we got Bean) however he is aggressive towards all other dogs and has tried to attack a full grown Husky. Bean is only 8 pounds - he's a deer legged chi so taller than most, which lets him reach the garbage can. He will make off with anything he can reach and hide it in the backyard. He marks everything. He's not really incontinent, but he prefers to pee in the house and will sneak away to do so. Shoes are his favorite target. Incontinent was the closest issues that was an option. We have worked with various trainers to help him but eventually were told the trainers couldn't help - this is after a private training session during which Bean pooped next to my foot without any warning, got taken outside for a while, and then when he came back, he peed on my husband's shoe. The trainer finally acknowledged that Bean doesn't have a 'tell' like most dogs, he doesn't indicate in any way. Sometimes he comes inside to pee on something. At times, not just under stress, Bean will even mark his food. The vet rules out any physical issues and has recommended UC Davis for a psychological assessment and treatment due to his ongoing issues. He likes to burrow into things - he burrowed into our couch and destroyed it from the inside out. Bean is also very affectionate, loves to cuddle with his people, lets you play with him and will come to you to play, wants to sleep with you, and will follow you through the house. He knows sit, down, outside, high 5, shake, and will move to other side of the 'kitchen border line' when we're cooking and remind the dogs to back up. He absolutely loves bananas and will come running if you start to peel one. He's super cute. He's such a mix of love and destruction. This is really hard. We all love Bean, but we've had to recognize we can't live with the ongoing stress his destruction causes and the risk of harm to our friends and family. We just can't live with an animal aggressive to children. He'd be best suited for someone who is partially deaf, has lost their sense of smell, who doesn't have any children, and doesn't socialize. Really, he'd be great for an elderly lady with limited mobility who would like a dog that doubles as a personal heater, and who has a female care provider who can clean up after Bean. Please give this little guy a home he can thrive in. He's a sweetheart, just not a very bright one.
