About Ollie

Golden Retriever / Poodle
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Ollie Male Golden-doodle DOB: 11/1/2020 Neutered Shots: UTD Adoption fee: $150 Location: Bastrop TX Ollie is a 2 year old Golden-doodle I took in for rescue over the summer from some inexperienced dog owners who were in over their head. Ollie is a great dog! He's sweet once he knows and trusts you, loves to fetch, is good in a crate, travels quietly and well in a car, is healthy, happy . . .and OMG does he have the biggest puppy-dog eyes you've ever seen! Unfortunately, Ollie is not good with strangers. His original owners sent him to training for 2 weeks with a different facility, but they told me they were never shown how to reinforce his training properly. They needed to find him a new home because they were living in an RV with a toddler and a new infant, and they couldn't handle his behavior toward strangers in a situation like that. I've done a refresher on obedience with him and addressed his behavior, and I can successfully take Ollie anywhere without issue. He does not, however, like to be approached by strangers and will keep a careful eye on them as they walk up to you to talk (just watching, no lunging or barking). He also does not do well if someone reaches out to pet him or holds their hand out to him to sniff, however, if the leash is handed over to the new person and they walk calmly with him for a few minutes, he seems to do quite well. He has snapped at a few people in the past who reached for him and the previous owners said that he nipped a potential adopter before I took him. Because of this I have muzzle acclimated him, although he has not used a muzzle while with his foster. Ollie KNOWS his obedience and will walk nicely on a loose leash, heel, sit, down, stay, and recall on a 6 ft leash (basic obedience). He's been in a home based foster situation with a friend of mine to test his aptitude for retriever training, and I was told he has the stuff to make a good hunting buddy. He is usually good at recall off-leash too, however, I did not progress him to off-leash work while here so I will not say that he is solid on that. Ollie needs a home with an experienced dog family who will provided the needed structure/boundaries for Ollie so he won't throw his weight around or start to regress in his behavior toward strangers. He is not what people typically think of when thinking of a Golden-doodle. He is an exuberant and loving dog, and really deserves a life with someone as their best friend and hunting buddy. If you or someone you know is interested in giving Ollie a home, please email [email protected] for a link to our adoption application. Ollie will only be adopted to someone who is an experienced dog owner and has experience with dominant dogs and behavioral issues.
