About Yama

Adoption Fee: $200
Akita
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Yama means Mountain in Japanese. He's a big boy, so it seems an appropriate name for this gentle giant. Just 3 years old and his previous owner just didn't want him anymore... Since he arrived, he went from nervous and guarded to a total sweetheart. He is perfect in the house, learned the routine of where to go for outside necessities in just one trip - the second time he went directly to the laundry room door without hesitation. Very soft mouth for taking reward treats. Barks like a good watch dog when the doorbell rings. We gave him supervised access to the living area: he inspected every square inch of the house but disturbed nothing. After that he found a place to lie down and relax. I sat with a book and he reclined within visual distance. When I prepared dinner, Yama is tall enough to sniff the contents on the counter but good manners prevailed and he didn't even try to take anything off the counter although he could have reached anything he wanted. Later, he planted himself in the middle of the kitchen floor - so I had to step over him to get from stove to sink, for example, and he didn't flinch or react in any way to my moving over and around him. So I am finding that he is accustomed to being a house dog, but also knows what a kennel is and what to do with no complaints or objection. He knows 'sit'; we'll see what other commands he might know. Not sure yet - but given his size and that he was from a 'breeder', it might have been a reason for him to not be shown? He has an awesome free stack and moves out with the grace and dignity we admire in the Akita.
