About Finn

Border Collie / Australian Cattle Dog
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Finley came into my care in efforts to save him from the humane society. While in my care for the past 7 months, Finn has grown into his personality, as he will be a 1-year-old in December this year (2022). I have been very careful with deciding which home he deserves to go to as I have become very familiar with what I think he needs most. I am currently a vet student who has been able to provide him with wonderful medical care as he is current on all vaccines/monthly preventative/and blood work (including blood type), assuring you he is very healthy and well cared for. My reason for rehoming Finn is because I feel my life doesn't fit his needs best. We go on daily runs or hikes, which he absolutely loves. When Finn was younger, he was able to walk in Old Town Fort Collins with no reactivity issues and could settle underneath the tables at a brewery or restaurant. However, now I am starting to learn that he is most comfortable either at home or on the ranch where he is around 'his' people that he has grown to know and love. I am a social person with many people over at the house, but this makes Finn fearful. I have been told over and over again that he will outgrow this behavior, but with being in vet school I just don't have the time to work any further with him. What Finn's reactivity looks like-- When a stranger comes into the home, Finn will approach to sniff and begin barking. He is afraid in the stranger leans down to touch him or moves too quickly. What this results in is our little dance--our visitor will toss treats away from themselves without physically touching Finn or staring at him until Finn settles down and approaches excitedly. He has never bitten anyone as a reaction of his fearfulness. He is just vocal. To allow Finn to find improvement and confidence in himself, him and I attended a reactivity dog course for the span of 6 weeks (Summit Dog Training, Fort Collins) where we have learned skills for coping and positive responses. On walks we still have to either change sides of the road if a dog is upcoming or stand off of the trail to avoid any reactivity. However, Finn is able to sit quietly or roll in the grass when passerbys are walking by due to the training we have completed. When no one is near, Finn is a fabulous off the leash trail runner with great recall that makes me comfortable to take him everywhere I go. I envision Finn moving to a family with land where he isn't commonly approached by strangers, or on a farm where he can work as he is thrilled with animals. When off the leash, Finn's reactivity is minimal--we believe it all stems from the leash. If you would like to know more about Finley, or have questions about his training and would like to meet him, please leave me a voicemail or email with your contact info. It truly am in love with this boy and absolutely see sadness for a few months once he is rehomed. However, I promised I would do what is best for him and I believe he needs a different lifestyle than what I have to offer.
