About Annie

Adoption Fee: $100
Jack Russell / Beagle
Age: Puppy
Sex: Female

Female, 1 year old, spayed JRT mix available at Indiana shelter: I live in Michigan and we adopted a JRT mix from Ark Animal Rescue in LaGrange, Indiana (right over the border from MI). Her name is Annie and they had her listed as a terrier mix, but I believe she is clearly a wire-haired JRT mixed with beagle. She has an amazing vertical jump and looks like a JRT in the face, with the floppy ears, longer torso, and coloring of a beagle. She is approximately 1 year old and weighs around 20 pounds, and she is spayed. She is a wonderful dog, but unfortunately after 10 days with her, it was clear that our resident dog (a 6-year old terrier mix) was not going to adapt and accept her. So we made the sad decision to return her to Ark. Here is a link to the Ark website with the page of adoptable animals: https://arkanimalrescue.weebly.com/adoptable-dogs--cats.html and here is the link to her on Petfinder: https://www.petfinder.com/dog/annie-59004702/in/lagrange/ark-animal-sanctuary-in667/). Their adoption fee is only $100. As of Thursday, 12/1/22 at noon, she was still available. I am worried that she will be adopted by someone who just sees how cute she is but doesn't understand her breed, and then ends up returning her. And the shelter is very stressful for her, obviously. Here is some information about her: She is really curious and super smart. In the week+ that we had her, she learned how to sit, lie down, and play fetch with a tennis ball, usually with only one or two repetitions. She is somewhat fearful of new situations and different stimuli on walks (e.g., someone on a scooter or bike), but she is extremely treat-motivated and responded really well on walks to the 'look' command: when someone walked by with a dog, etc., and we wanted her attention so she wouldn't react, we said 'look' and she did and we gave her a small treat. She learned this very quickly and was able to do it effectively on walks within a few days of working with her. She seemed to really like our dog and wanted to play, but unfortunately he didn't feel the same way! She is super-snuggly and loving, and wants to cuddle when she's not playing. She bonded very quickly to me, our college-aged daughter, and my husband, though she was very fearful/reactive towards our young adult son. She is also high energy and loved going on walks and playing with the ball and rope toy in the backyard. She does have some separation anxiety and hated being crated or put in a room by herself, but I am guessing that with time, patience, and another friendly dog in the home, she would feel happy and less anxious. She is potty trained and is able to go 8 hours at night without having an accident (though she did have a couple of accidents during the day early on due to anxiety, I think). She has the most adorable head tilt and beautiful long eyelashes--she is truly one of the cutest dogs I've ever seen. She is an amazing, adorable, smart, loving dog.
