About Ruger

Adoption Fee: $184.63
American Bulldog
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Ruger is a 7-year-old who would do well with a compatible medium to large dog and children 12 years or older. Ruger lived with a family most of his life, but came to WCHS in Slinger, WI when they moved to a place where he could not follow. He initially was somewhat discombobulated by the new environment and strange noises of the shelter, but he is a cheerful and optimistic guy so he has started to relax. He cannot share a home with any small dogs or cats because he likes to chase and torment little furry critters. Rugar stays calm around dogs that are similar in size, but does not seem to want to play very much. He does OK with all types of handling and is stable, laid-back, and tranquil. Once he gets into his new forever home, he is sure to come out of his shell and blossom into his true loyal, loving, and devoted self. He does fancy fanny scratches and if you find the magical spot under his chin, Ruger will really lean into it. As the volunteers spend more time with him, he certainly enjoys hanging out for some quiet together time after a walk. Ruger is great on a walk; he likes to start with a bit of a run, slowing to a jog after a few minutes and finally a brisk walk once a little energy is burned. Ruger loves to be out and about enjoying Mother Nature; he would love a long walk each day. He is very smart and enjoys learning new things; he has already mastered the cues for 'sit' and 'shake/paw' and accept rewards more gently if reminded to be 'easy'. It would be great to have training sessions with Ruger because that would give him a fabulous way to work his brain and a phenomenal way for you to bond. He has been described as friendly, quiet, sometimes playful, calm, and gentle, intelligent, and affectionate. Since he weighs about 99 pounds, he is probably a smidge too big for your lap, but he would be proud to have a spot by your side where he can lay next to you. In his previous home Ruger was able to roam free when he was alone because he was cool, relaxed, and respectful of possessions. He does know how to open latch handle doors and is intrigued by the garbage if given the opportunity, so initially perhaps he should be restricted until you work out the rhythm of the household. If you are looking for a big, happy, and handsome hunk to share your life, Ruger may fit that description to a tee. Stop by to meet Ruger in person and make his acquaintance; you will be impressed.
