About Balto

Attention husky lovers, Balto is a 3-year-old who could be the perfect companion for you. Any children in his family should be 8 years or older because he is still working on manners. He can be mouthy and, when excited, has trouble keeping four-on-the-floor; he could accidentally knock over a tiny tot. Balto came to WCHS in Slinger, WI from another area shelter where he was a stray. How is that for a shocker - a husky that wandered off. He is a high-octane guy and has a ton of energy. He could share his home with a dog buddy who can handle his exuberance and playstyle. He does play kind of rough and can be a tad dominant and pushy; he also likes to talk while he is romping. Balto is very tolerant and offers play bows to communicate to his mates that he is just having a good time; his housemates will need to be a good match. He does OK with all sorts of handling, although he might think it is all part of a game and try in join in with his mouth. Balto is looking for a family who has experience with his breed, will set boundaries and be calm, assertive pack leaders. He will need lots of exercise every day to help him be the best boy ever. He is playful, athletic, agile, and free-spirited; his sense of wanderlust means he is always up for an adventure. Balto will be counting on you to keep him safe because his love of escapades can get him into trouble; remember the 'stray' part of his story. He is also very smart and needs to keep his beautiful brain busy and engaged. Training is very important; it will allow him to understand what you want him to do and will help him be confident that he is making you proud. He already knows the cues for 'sit' and 'down' and accepts rewards gently for a job well done. He will be content for quiet evenings curled up with you once he has had sufficient outlets for his energy; at 54 pounds he may even make a pseudo-lapdog. It would be awesome for him to have a job or two; perhaps he could participate in canine sports or rally, carry a backpack during hikes or even get involved in pulling carts. Balto is outgoing and fun; if you have a sense of humor, his mischievous streak will always keep you laughing. He will be loyal forever and a constant companion.
