Sutherland A682258 1 Year Old Male Doberman Pinscher URGENT NEEDS RESCUE BY 12/4/2022 Sutherland was originally a stray that arrived to the shelter on 08/19/2022 and was adopted on 08/28/2022. His new family had a post-adoption consultation with their own vet a month later and received a follow-up clean bill of health. Their veterinarian suggested moving Sutherland off a grain-free diet and recommended an alternate brand of food, however within a month of the new food Sutherland started showing a change in his health. On 11/12/2022 Sutherland was involved in a minor one puncture bite to the child in the home, Sutherland sat down with the child for consoling and when the child got up to walk away Sutherland stood up, yelped, and caused minor bite to arm. Due to this incident and a noticeable decrease in Sutherlands health he was surrendered back to the shelter on 11/20/2022. When Sutherland was brought to the shelter he appeared emaciated and weighed less than when adopted in August. He appeared slightly lethargic and just walking to his kennel appeared to be a labored effort. On medical rounds that evening Sutherland was observed lying motionless in his kennel and not responding to staff, he was not able to get up or even lift his head on his own. He was taken to off-site urgent care center for overnight observation, and after receiving intravenous fluids he was stabilized and returned to the shelter on 11/22/2022 and was diagnosed with portosystemic (liver) shunt. Sutherland is currently on a prescription diet and has been stable, in a decent portion of cases a prescription diet will allow the dog to live a relatively long life. However, if Sutherland shows any repeat neurological or behavioral concerns, he may require surgery which the shelter cannot provide due to limited resources and is in need of rescue.
