Meet PETEY! STATS: 8 year old male Maltese LOCATION: Pensacola FL NEEDS: Love and patience, another small dog in the home, fenced yard, no kids. A human who can spend a lot of time with him. HIGHLIGHTS: Adorable and sweet little guy who will melt your heart. Petey is an 8 year old, 8.4 pound Maltese who was surrendered to us. He has not been very well socialized with people and can be timid, but he wants to be loved. He is not going to be a dog that you can pick up and start immediately loving on, but if you let him relax and settle in on his own terms he will come to you when he wants your attention and it's the sweetest thing you've ever seen. His foster mom said the first time he patted her hand to be petted she almost cried. Petey has warmed up quite a bit, but still needs some work before he is completely trusting of his person. He typically stays close, but if you reach for him he may move away and play a little hard to get! His foster mom said it took a little bit before he would willingly come to her to be put up on the sofa or the bed, but now he wants up! He is not an easy dog to just reach down and pick up but if you wait until he is lying down you can pick him up. Once you have him, Petey is just precious and loving. He enjoys having his face scratched and loves to lie on the sofa and the big bed. He prefers to be touching his foster mom in bed when he's next to her, and he doesn't like it when another dog invades his space. He's all bark and no bite though, literally! He has no teeth! As Petey has become comfortable in his home he has displayed some really cute behaviors. When he's happy, he gets a little prancy, and it's adorable! He also stands on his back legs and waves his legs to get treats. Petey adores other dogs, and wants to know where they are, and what they are doing. He's curious about their activity and wants to join the pack. He takes his cues from, and feels most comfortable with, other dogs. His perfect home absolutely needs to have at least one other small dog in it. Petey has been around cats and chickens and wasn't phased a bit, but children aren't a good fit for him. He needs a quiet home with a retired or stay at home human who can spend a lot of time with him. Petey must also have a secure fenced yard in his new home. His house training is a work in progress. No one has ever worked with him on this before and he still is trying to figure out what he is and isn't supposed to do. Since reprimanding him or pushing him into an uncomfortable situation sets him back, this can be a bit of a challenge. However he will follow the other dogs in and out with ease. That, plus treats and positive reinforcement, are likely the keys to helping him learn. Petey has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, fecal tested, heartworm negative, has had a 12 month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. We also got him a needed dental and he did lose all of his teeth so his little tongue pokes out every once in awhile which only adds to his cuteness! He had a funny little hitch in his walk when he first came in, which appears to be arthritis. He is getting a daily supplement of cosequin and is doing very well with it. Overall Petey is very sweet and super cute little dog who will be well worth someone's time and effort to let him know that he deserves to be a loved pet!
