Meet FORTIS! STATS: 4 year old Chihuahua LOCATION: Pensacola, FL NEEDS: Quiet home with an owner willing to give him time to adjust to a new home, a secure fenced yard and a small doggy friend. HIGHLIGHTS: Very loving! Fortis is an adorable 4 year old, 6.1 pound Chihuahua who came to us as an owner surrender because his owner was losing her home. He is a very timid little guy who will warm up and be super sweet if given the chance. Fortis is nervous with new people and places, but if you allow him time to settle he will happily sit with you on the couch and snuggle. He loves belly rubs and head scratches and any kind of affection. Fortis will paw at you when he wants attention and he really loves to climb up on the back on the sofa for naps. His foster mom calls him her 'kitty puppy'. If you go towards him he will retreat, go belly up and pee from nervousness. He likes to go into an open door kennel that is set up just for him so he has a place to call his own when he is feeling nervous. Fortis is good with most dogs, and needs a home with another small dog in it to help him know he's in a safe place. We don't know how he would be with cats, but he's very interested in the neighborhood cats in a curious way. However if they hiss at him he runs and hides! Younger kids will make him very nervous but older kids who are used to small dogs and can give him his space should be ok. Fortis needs a very secure fenced yard. He is too afraid of the unknown to ever have a chance to get loose. He is also afraid of a harness but is okay with a collar. Fortis is not housebroken, but is working on it. He knows to come and get his foster mom when he has to potty, but if you miss his cues he will potty inside. At night he sleeps curled up between his foster parents. Fortis is a very sweet little guy who hasn't had a lot of exposure to different things in his life, but with a patient calm and loving owner he will shine! He has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, fecal tested, heartworm negative and has had a 12 month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. Puppies, dogs with pending vet appointments, and dogs with behavioral issues are only adoptable within a 1 hour drive to Pensacola. *We are a foster-based rescue and do not have a facility. Our dogs live in private homes in and around the Pensacola area until they are adopted. *To meet a dog or be considered for adoption you must first submit an adoption application for review.
