Meet FERGIE! STATS: 6 year old tiny Chihuahua mix LOCATION: Pensacola FL NEEDS: A quiet home with a patient family. Fence yard is a must, no kids. HIGHLIGHTS: Tiny and sweet, but shy and skittish too! Adorable Fergie is a 6 year old, 7 pound Chihuahua mix with quite a story. Little Fergie showed up one day with three other dogs on a dead end road known to be a common dumping ground. A nice lady who lives on that road was able to slowly get them to safety. Fergie was the last one and was out there for a little over two weeks. It was a very traumatizing experience for her and she was absolutely terrified. We have had her in rescue since July working with her slowly to regain her trust in people. She hid under the bed and it took several weeks before she would stay in the same room with you. But she has really come around, and we are happy to say that we believe she is finally ready to find a new home. That doesn't mean that she's still not skittish and won't take a little bit of time in a new home to relax. She is going to need people who will be patient with her and let her relax in her new home. We moved her from her first foster home because a couple of dogs there were picking on her. She is now in a quieter environment where she can explore and do her own thing without anyone bothering her, and that is exactly what she will need in her new home at first. Fergie knows her name and responds by watching you closely and getting ready to spring into action to get away from you. But she will now lie close to her foster mom in bed and let her rub on her for a bit. She has even jumped into her foster mom's lap, but she only stayed for a minute because she had second thoughts about her decision! It's going to be a lot of baby steps with Fergie! Fergie is very food motivated and will come to her foster mom and take food from her hand. Her foster mom says that's the best part of the day! Of course, she can walk by her, stop and scratch her head...and the next time she tries it Fergie takes off through the house. She knows how to use the doggy door and will run in and out all day to go potty. She does not know how to walk on a leash, and holding her long enough to put on a harness is very stressful. She cannot go to a home without a very secure fenced yard. She does not trust people and this is not a dog who can be loose ever again. She's been through enough! Fergie plays with toys by herself and has even tried to engage in play with other dogs. We don't know how she would be with cats but wouldn't anticipate any issue there. She has not been exposed to kids but due to her shyness and skittishness, kids are not a good idea. At night she sleeps on the big bed. Fergie has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, spayed, fecal tested, heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. Fergie is little and cute as can be. She needs someone who is patient and willing to let her learn at her own pace. She will be a fantastic little companion for someone who is willing to work with her to overcome her fears.
