About Dice

Pit Bull mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

This is one of the saddest dogs that I have evaluated today. Dice was obviously once owned and loved by someone; she's on the pudgy side and overall in good condition.? It's very clear that she's overwhelmed in the shelter. We definitely can't blame her, the shelter is a noisy, busy place and definitely never meant to be a home. She was just laying quietly in her kennel when I went to get her. She came out and she walks very nice on leash. She was well behaved although probably a bit overwhelmed during physical exam. She absolutely was a very good girl though. Because she is currently as shut down as she is, it's very difficult to get a good read on general behaviors. At this time she was not interested in toys or food, but a new family or potential adopter would need to keep in mind that when she comes out of her shell her behavior is definitely going to change.? Right now she would love a foster home or foster to adopt home where she could get out of the shelter and find a quiet place to decompress and remember what it's like to live again like a normal dog. At this time we would definitely recommend a quiet home. Busy, crazy homes with tons of people in and out would be way too much for this girl. She needs someone who will just be patient and let her slowly come out of her shell. Her new person will need to reward brave behavior and just ignore the scared behavior.??? At this time we would recommend that she be placed in a family with kids 12 years in age and over; right now she is just way too overwhelmed to deal with young children. She definitely hasn't done anything wrong during her evaluation, we just certainly don't think it would be beneficial to put her in a situation which would be too much for her. ?Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their own size; and dog meets with the resident dogs are always encouraged. Shelter cat testing is not very reliable and we always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendation on suitability of placement with children by their ages is based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets or cats. Behavior evaluations should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at this point in time; HBPAC believes all dog families need to be prepared to invest time and energy into training as well as provide common sense management of their new dog. We always encourage family to do some research on the breeds or mixes of breeds prior to adoption as many can have some unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families.
