[Read About Natural Seizure Care] Kaya is 10+ years old. She has been our rescue for 9 1/2 years and does ok in homes with yards and strong adults. She does 'love' a few men- mostly tall and kind men, but she is scared to this day of other men. She has only ever lived with us except for 14 weeks as a pup. We are caring pet owners having had 9 dogs in our family over the past 30 years. She is sweet most of the time. She loves the couch and snoozing when she finally relaxes, but spends most of her day following us in the house. She gets up and follows anytime a person moves their position in the home. She is getting increasingly aggressive, we think due to the number of medications for so many years that she needs combined with her fearful, anxious demeanor. We have a new baby coming into the household and can't risk her aggressiveness with a baby. Also, she requires high maintenance- which we have done lovingly for her entire life- but with a baby coming, the number of off-limits zones in the house will diminish what little quality of life she has left. She doesn't grasp 'off limits' and will break dog barriers (Even when installed into the wall studs). She has been on multiple seizure meds for 8 years, and has controlled seizures- about once every 3 months, with some break-through seizures. These are grand mal. She loses bowel, urinary, and sometimes expresses glands during seizures. She has been with another female dog her entire life, and is not aggressive to that dog- who is dominant. When she seizes, the seizure scares the other dog so much that she cowers. (imagine 9 years of that fear for our other dog) She currently lives with cats and is fine with them. But, she attacked two dogs in the past 3 months, and one dog several years ago-taken to the dog hospital with minor injuries. She is *very* strong and cannot be walked without a strong person walking her, ready to pick her up if she pulls to attack other dogs while walking. She used to be able to go to the dog park, but cannot be trusted now. She cannot be 'off leash' except inside our home, or in very secure fenced areas. She has issues learning and remembering, so she is a lot of work as a pet- she frequently poops or pees indoors if you don't watch for the 'signs' diligently- or if she is left unattended for more than a few hours. We do not leave her outdoors unattended, because she has started to break down fencing to get to neighbor pets. She has serious mental issues that include extreme anxiety and fear. I cannot stress enough that we have tried everything but she has so much trouble learning that it is a losing battle. She is very motivated by food. We have loved her for 9+ years -we have been her rescue home (found her as a pup). We have taken her to specialists, good vet care, shots, surgeries when she eats un-edible things, etc. We are broken up about this. We are hoping there is an angel out there who will take her in her older years - so we don't have to make an impossibly hard decision. We just can't manage the level of care she needs and the potential risks with her along with having a newborn.
