About Myka

Adoption Fee: $345
Australian Shepherd / Border Collie
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Myka is looking for her own special furever family. This beautiful girl has been let down by humans to the point that it's hard for her to trust. But with patience and understanding, when she lets down her walls, she is an absolutely incredible girl. Myka was surrendered to the shelter by her family. It was obvious that she had been neglected for quite some time, she was several pounds underweight and her fur was so badly matted with filth and feces that at least half of her body had to be shaved. Her back legs were matted together to the point that she couldn't walk easily. Fast forward and her fur is growing back and she is becoming the beautiful girl she should have always been. Myka is still extremely shy and is scared when she encounters new things. Her foster mom believes that Myka was probably the victim of abuse because she cowers and tries to slink away if a hand is raised near her. Once she trusts though, she is the absolute sweetest girl. She is learning pretty quickly that snuggling is pretty awesome. She loves to get pets and scratches, and is even rolling over for belly rubs. Myka is an Aussie/Border collie mix that tends toward the looks and characteristics of the border collie. She LOVES to run and since she would be considered a flight risk because of her shyness and fearful demeanor, a fenced yard is an absolute must. Her herding instincts are very strong. It's possible that once she bonds with her new family, she could be taught herding or agility, or flyball. She is already fascinated with playing ball, she just isn't quite sure that she's supposed to bring it back. Myla loves other dogs and is very submissive to all of her foster fur siblings. She loves to just chase them and herd them and be chased and herded by them. A friendly, playful dog companion is a must for Myka; she learns that the world is ok by watching their cues and body language. She loves to chew on bones and kongs. She is crate trained and potty trained. She has had an occasional accident right in front of the door because her foster mom missed her cues; she just goes and stands quietly in front of the door. Myka loves walks, and is getting more confident with each one, but still has a long way to go before she will feel safe on a walk. This is another area where a friendly confident dog sibling can show her it's all ok. Myka has not been around children but it is believed that she would love the attention an older child could give her. Because she is so timid, younger children are probably not a good fit because it's believed their quick movements and louder voices would scare her. Her strong herding instincts have caused her to stalk her foster mom's indoor cat. Although she hasn't shown any aggression toward the cat she gets laser focused so a home without cats may be best. Myka is approximately 2 %BD-3 yo old and weighs about 34#. She is spayed and UTD on all of her vaccines. She is on HW and flea prevention. What Myka Needs in in Her Furever Home: A patient and loving human(s). Myka will need to be given the time and space she needs to adjust to her new home. She is still very shy and timid around new people and in new situations. Another confident, sweet and playful dog is a must for Myka. She takes her cues from the other dogs in the house to see what is safe and ok to try. A fenced yard. Myka should be considered a flight risk at all times until she has settled into her new family. She is very athletic so a 4 foot fence is necessary. A crate. This is her safe place, especially during her initial settling in period. A meet and greet with her potential new family and her new fur sibling would be desirable. She is still skittish when she is unsure of a new situation, so she would need to be introduced slowly, and with lots of reassurance and positive feedback (and some strategically used treats). Once she is comfortable and knows she is safe, she is all in with her heart. Myka is being fostered in Jackson, OH.
