About OREO

Adoption Fee: $475.00
Poodle / Shih Tzu
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

OREO is still looking for home! STATS: 2 1/2 year old Shih Tzu Poodle mix LOCATION: Pensacola FL NEEDS: Active owner or family, fenced yard. NO KIDS. Local adoption only! *Active means a person or family who will take him out to do a lot of different activities, keep him busy and work him... take him for brisk walks, run with him, play with him, take him to the beach and manage him. He needs a lot of stimulation, especially if he's going to be an only dog. Oreo is a gorgeous little dog but he is a handful and he is going to require the right person to adopt him. He is mostly very sweet, very playful and a real delight, BUT he has a bite history, he resource guards, and he can be a brat to some other dogs. He just needs the right home! Because of his bite history, he cannot be in a home with kids. Cats are iffy, but workable. Little dogs would not be a good fit for him. A more dominant female dog would be his best bet for a furry companion. And his person should be willing to continue working with him to help him become that perfect pet! If that's you, please apply! Oreo is a really beautiful 2 1/2 year old, 17 pound ShiPoo (Shihtzu and Poodle mix). He is a wonderful and playful boy who came to us with some resource guarding and barking issues. Usually we can work with a dog like that with no problem, but in his case after a failed adoption due to resource guarding, we felt that maybe a professional trainer would do him more good. He spent two weeks with Positive Splash Dog Training in their Board and Train Program. (A link to videos of his training are included at the end of this post. We also received a folder full of instructions on how to continue his training that we will be passing on to his adopter.) The changes in Oreo are fantastic, but he does still need a strong owner with some sort of training experience. It is important that Oreo's new person continues with the training techniques he has learned. The biggest change in Oreo that we noted is that he no longer resource guards his food when near other dogs or people. He does like to take items that do not belong to him and will run (it's a game for him) until you try to take the item from him, then he gets upset. His training has taught him to let go when you give him a specific command. He is doing very well with this. We believe Oreo will do best with another strong-willed female dog about his size in the home to keep him occupied and busy. If he gets bored, he gets into trouble. Regardless of his training, he has a bite history related to the resource guarding and should not go to a home with children. He has been around a cat and barked initially, but settled eventually. Using the new training techniques we don't believe a cat will be a problem for him, but you should expect some barking. Oreo is very energetic and affectionate and needs an active family or person to spend time with him, playing and snuggling and giving him lots of attention! He is friendly and loves everyone. He is always very excited to meet new people. Oreo enjoys being around his person and can usually be found nearby. He sleeps in the big bed with his foster mom, cuddled up close. Oreo loves to run and play and he's pretty much ON all the time. He definitely needs a home with a playful dog buddy (we believe an alpha female would be best) and a fenced yard for lots of playtime. Oreo really likes car rides but, according to his previous owner, he did jump out of an open window once! He is leash trained. He is not quite 100% housebroken but we think that's mainly because he's in a home with a lot of different dogs. Once he's in his new home with a good routine we think he'll be fine. Oreo has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, fecal tested, heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.
