About SUMMER

Adoption Fee: $350
Poodle
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

SUMMER is ready to find her furever family! STATS: 6 year old female Toy Poodle LOCATION: Pensacola FL NEEDS: A calm home with a very secure yard, another playful dog in the home, a patient owner. Local adoption only. HIGHLIGHTS: Sweet, playful, happy with a fun personality! Summer is a sweet, but still skittish, Toy Poodle who was surrendered to us. She does not seem to have had much interaction with people, but she has been making excellent progress! Summer knows her name and will come in and out of the house with the other dogs and her foster mom, and comes for a treat or dinner when she's called. She knows how to use doggy stairs and will come up on the big bed sometimes, but usually only after her foster dad is out of bed. Her preferred spot to sleep is in a dog bed on the floor next to her foster mom's side of the bed. Summer is more relaxed with her foster mom, and will lie nearby on the floor, or on the sofa if her foster dad isn't too close. Men intimidate her, and she barks at her foster dad but she will take treats from him! She is very treat and food motivated (she loves peanut butter and ice cream!). She's learning 'stay' so she can be approached and picked up. She still moves away, but she is a work in progress. Her foster mom is teaching her that human touch is a good thing, and she's been figuring out that people aren't all bad! She has recently that she likes butt rubs! Summer is a very smart little dog and is learning quickly, but she will need a patient owner to continue to work with her and understand that she is not going to be a lap dog overnight. That said, she wants attention and will jump up on her foster mom's leg with a wagging tail, sometimes for no reason at all! She's a sucker for a kind word or treat and she follows her foster mom everywhere she goes, always right behind her. Most of the time she will still not allow someone to pet her or reach for her without shying away and moving a safe distance from them, but you can pick her up and pet her and brush her. She is getting much more comfortable being petted. Even though human touch is a little scary to her she wants to be loved and she is a friendly little dog! Summer has a funny habit of sticking her face right into her foster mom's face and often will get almost close enough for a kiss or a nose bump. She happily greets her foster mom when she comes home from work with happy bounces. She barks at her foster dad, and at the mailman, and when the other dogs bark, but she generally isn't a barky dog. Summer is very happy and playful. She really loves having a Nylabone to chew on too. She does resource guard her bones and toys with a little growl if another dog comes by, likely because she has never had any before and she doesn't want to share, but that's as far as it goes. Summer likes being outside, but not alone, and she loves nothing more than doing zoomies around the yard with another dog. If they won't play, she will run in circles by herself! She is always hoping one of her foster siblings will run with her though and would be best with a playful dog close to her size. She needs another dog in the home to help her learn to dog! Summer is being fostered in a home with cats and has no problem with them at all. She will not be happy in a home with little kids (they'll make her nervous and might not understand her cues when she needs space) but older kids should be fine for her. Summer requires a fenced yard and can never be off leash outside of a secure area. She is not leash trained completely but her foster mom is teaching her and she's doing great! Summer rides well in the car, sitting quietly on a lap. She is a very smart little dog. She is not fully housebroken but is doing better by observing the other dogs. If somebody will continue to work with her it is something she will pick up quickly! When her foster mom is home Summer has very few accidents in the house. She just doesn't understand the concept of holding it yet. Summer will need regular brushing and frequent grooming. Whoever adopts her should make sure she gets the attention she needs to stay well groomed. She does not mind being bathed and brushed out. She did very well at a recent visit to the groomer. Overall, Summer is a sweet natured, happy, and playful but skittish girl who needs a home with someone loving and patient who will enjoy taking her the rest of the way on her journey towards becoming a perfect companion and pet. With the right family Summer is going to thrive and bring them so much joy! Summer has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, spayed, had a dental, is fecal tested, heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.
