About Chappie

Chihuahua mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

We aren't going to lie: Chappie is a one-of-a-kind dog. You may regret adopting this old codger at some point or another, maybe more than once. But, if you stick with him and stick to the tricks that help Chappie feel safe with you (and don't mind going through difficult times finding your own tricks), we promise you will love Chappie as much as we do! 9-year old 6-pound Chappie found himself without a home after his person sadly passed away. Family members passed him around trying to care for him, but he ultimately found himself very unhappy at a rural shelter. The shelter knew he would be more comfortable in a foster home, so they contacted us and has been in a foster home for several months, healing from his neuter and dental (with several teeth extractions) and settling in to his foster home life. This petite cranky-pants is still picky about how he will let humans interact with him, but once he becomes comfortable, his silly sweet side comes out. Chappie's favorite activities are snuggling (or playful wrestling) with his favorite people on the couch, enjoying his fluffy blanket naps, meal and treat times, growling at the energetic young dogs in his foster home, and biting anyone who has the nerve to pick him up or pet him when he didn't want them to do so. This combination means that potential adopters need to be ready for anything when it comes to this youngish senior guy. Chappie is not a good fit for a home with children in residence or for people who do not have experience with challenging dog behaviors (or are not willing to learn and go through some difficult times with him). He would be an excellent fit for someone who is looking for a low-maintenance, not-too-active companion and is willing to take the love Chappie will give, on Chappie's terms. Chappie prefers to potty outside, but is very reliably potty pad trained, as well. For his initial settling in period, Chappie would do best with a secure area to potty without needing to be touched a lot to get there (such as a fenced yard, or a potty spot on an apartment balcony). Chappie neither wants nor needs a lot of walks, but does enjoy exploring outdoors in a safe environment. When first bringing Chappie home, he will need to be given lots of space to become comfortable. His foster family can provide lots of ideas on how to best care for him during this time. Faint of heart need not apply! Chappie's dislike of being touched or picked up is no joke, but there are ways to work with it and to convince him that it was his idea to have that extra pet, after all. Chappie will need adopters who can handle his mood swings and appreciate when he has decided he would like to play, wrestle or snuggle. Chappie gets along well with the older, more sedate dogs in his foster home, but does not need a canine companion. He was initially unhappy to discover a cat in his foster home, but has come to terms with the kitty and they both leave eachother alone now. Chappie enjoys his kennel and likes to have a safe 'cave' to retreat to, but he prefers to be able to sleep snuggled in bed with his people (once he trusts them enough). If you've got thick skin (both literally and figuratively), a brave heart, and enjoy those couch snuggles while binge-watching your favorite TV show, why not give Chappie a chance? Chappie is neutered, microchipped, wormed, and current in routine, rabies, and bordatella vaccinations. His adoption donation is $275.
