Please note that we will ask for a vet reference. Name: George Age: 7 years Breed: Great Dane/Pointer mix, XL, 95# Sex: Male, neutered Location: Kennebec County, Maine VET INFORMATION: George is up to date with rabies and distemper until 2025, has tested heartworm negative this year, is microchipped, and is completely blind. His owners were told that his macular degeneration is due to inbreeding and genetics. George's vet said that his eyes look healthy and have had no discharge whenever they've seen him. George had routine blood work done recently, and everything was normal. His vet's office tells us that, although he is a bit nervous to be there, he does very well with them when they communicate with him respectfully. Sadly, George has no teeth since his previous owners filed them to the gum line. While he is in no pain and experiencing no issues at this time, It is possible that he may need dental care in the future. George is very food sensitive. He is on a strict diet of Taste of the Wild dry food to help him. He rarely eats human food. OWNER INFORMATION: George has been with his current owners for about a year and a half. George is a loving, outgoing boy who is good with men, women, teenagers, other dogs, and cats. He is an indoor dog with the run of the house. George is housebroken but not leash trained. He knows the cue for 'Sit' and will follow you if you tap yourself on the leg as you walk. His owners tell us that he is very eager to learn and could likely learn other cues easily. George is able to navigate new places very well despite his blindness, so adapts to new situations and surroundings easily. George lives on a farm with many types of birds. He lives successfully with rabbits, fish, reptiles, cats, and other dogs. He is not possessive with treats, toys, or food. However, George has a strong prey drive toward birds. He has killed multiple chickens, ducks, and a pet bird. This is why his owners are looking for a new home for him. When he first came to his owners, if overstimulated, George would try to grab whatever was moving in front of him with his mouth; however, we are told that it was not aggressive or lunge action. He has never broken skin. Tragically, George also does not have any teeth as his original owners used a dremel to file them to the gum line. George has improved and he has had no incidents in almost a year. His owners believe he had learned how to play and rough house with their other dogs and didn't really realize that he couldn't act the same way with humans. After being told no and some light correction he figured out it was not acceptable behavior. GEORGE'S OWNERS WOULD LIKE YOU TO KNOW: 'George is the most loving dog. He has so much love to give and all he ever wants to do is spend time with his owners. He thinks he is a lap dog and often lays on top of us or tries to sit on our laps in the recliner. He really is a great dog.' Does anyone have room for sweet George? **Owner Surrender Disclaimer: These are blind and visually impaired dogs who are living in homes, but their owners can no longer keep them.
