About Koda

Adoption Fee: $150
German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Koda, a four-year-old German Shepherd dog, is in urgent need of a new home! We took Koda in as a foster 3.5 years ago when we lived in Chicago - he was removed from an owner's home at 6 months old who had the intent to euthanize him as he was a 'bad%A0dog'. Quickly we realized that in order to find a forever home he needed extensive behavioral modification, and this is what we have been working on for three years. He is a 95lb Shepherd who is quite dominant and would succeed in a home with a strong, dominant owner with breed experience. He would love a large yard to play in, maybe even with other large dogs - the city is not ideal for him as new, unfamiliar people are very stressful to him. Once he becomes accustomed to you'| He is snuggly, loving, PLAYFUL, and extremely protective. He would best succeed in a home with only adults in the home and few visitors (or owners that understand he will need to be crated/muzzled with all visitors if not intentionally and repeatedly introducing to a new adult). He would be a perfect personal and home protection animal. Koda has what trainers call 'fear aggression' - he is reactive toward unfamiliar adults and has a 1x bite history, which occurred 3 years ago when we put him into a situation that we now realize set him up for failure (large crowd, someone unexpectedly went in to pet him and he bit their hand and immediately released).%A0 Since this event, he has been muzzled every time he is in public or meeting someone new. Introducing him to someone new takes time, patience, and caution. He has demonstrated the ability to form new, close relationships (most recently with the trainers and staff at American Canine Academy, where he completed on and off leash board-amd-train. He is able to be at their facility happily unmuzzled). He has no food or toy aggression. His reactivity is solely directed at unfamiliar adults in his personal space/home. His favorite activities are playing ball, playing ball, playing ball... and then snuggling, getting Zoomies, playing with other large dogs. Please reach out if you are interested. We are happy to pay for continued training for Koda to ensure a smooth transition. - Sarah
