About CJ

Meet CJ This little nugget is heartbroken. He's lost his home and the only people who loved him. His daddy passed away and his mama went into a nursing home, giving him up. He was surrendered recently when his hooman sister's dog would not accept him. Poor CJ is so sad and confused. He's led such an uncertain life. To heal his broken heart, he needs a stable and loving home. A gentle and quiet environment where he knows he's loved and cherished. CJ is a Chihuahua, and we believe him to be around 2 years old. We paired him with another little dog, who has since been adopted, but his doggie friend helped him to gain a little confidence. When he first came to us, he just sat in his kennel and whined and moaned. He was so lonely and had no idea what to think. He is a sweet little guy, but slow to trust after being let down. He responds well to our staff and volunteers who go slowly with him, letting him know he's safe. He loves a good scratch on his back and quiet conversation. Hooman contact means the world to him. Once he gets to know you, he will show his excitement with his happy voice. CJ loves to go for walks, and is great on a leash. He will even let our staff carry him around after they patiently let him get to know them. He does well with other little dogs but big dogs are too much for him. CJ does not like cats and will need to be in a home without them. We think CJ will thrive when he is the apple of his new person or family's eye. We think kids may be overwhelming to him. CJ will love a person who wants a sweet dog to watch tv with, travel with, read a book with, or sit on the porch with. He loves hooman companionship. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out of state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship nor do we transport them to their new homes. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquished and also accepted from local Animal Control. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.
