About Darla

Adoption Fee: $250
American Staffordshire Terrier / Chihuahua
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Adoptable Darla is a young adult approx. 3 years old. She is a little overweight but her ideal weight is 30-35 lbs, and is a chihuahua terrier mix. Darla was pulled from a shelter months ago, literally moments before being euthanized. When we found a foster for her, I contacted the shelter and prayed she was still alive and that we weren't too late! Thank goodness we weren't. She was heartworm positive, and was believed to have something called IMHA. Thankfully after finishing her heartworm treatment, we believe that Darla's suspected IMHA was a result of heartworms. She has been weaned down to almost no medications, and her bloodwork continues to be perfect. Darla is finally in great health! Darla has also completed a 4 week board and train during her time in foster care to help with her house manners and overall obedience. Darla has the tools to succeed in the right home! Here are some notes from Darla's foster mom: 'Darla is extremely sweet and quiet, and wants to be near her people! She also really loves treats. She is perfect in her crate. She is house trained and has great house manners, (counter surfing, trash digging, etc). She can be nervous around unfamiliar people, so respecting her boundaries and allowing slow intros and not allowing people to rush her or pet her until she's comfortable will help set her up for success. Darla may find the excitability and sudden movements of young kids intimidating or overstimulating, so homes with older teens or adults only will suit her best. A house without cats is advised, given her strong prey drive with birds and squirrels. Darla has medium energy and can match the energy of a home. She does love her daily walks or games of fetch to get some energy out, but can hang around for a nap if that's what her people are doing. Darla also loves her chews and toys for some enrichment and play time! Darla does really well with our senior dog because they're both happy to live parallel lives and not really interact. Darla shows playful interest in our dog, as well as other dogs when we're out, but may be dog selective, so she will need slow, appropriate introductions. You can see a lot more pics, videos and info in the captions on our foster Instagram account @1poundpupatatime.'
