About LUCKY - $350

LUCKY was transferred to GaDaH from a shelter in Hawaii, he arrived at the rescue after a long flight and drive on Thursday, 18th August 2022. LUCKY is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, heartworm/tick tested negative. He is on monthly prevention, microchipped, has an estimated date of birth of 31 March 2021 and weighs 36 pounds. We have no way of knowing what the actual breed is, so it is up to people to look at the pictures and video's to make up their own mind. Lucky was initially in the kennels, then came over to the house with 15 other dogs and 2 cats and was a little over-whelmed when the dogs were playing and paid no attention to the cats. After being here at the rescue for 6 weeks, a wonderful volunteer family offered to foster Lucky to help him relax and settle more, with 15 dogs in the house it was something that he wasn't really able to do here at the rescue. Lucky went to his new foster family on Sunday, 2nd October 2022. From his foster family: He has settled in well, he started learning basic commands easily and in December he started to attend a group training class to expose him to different environments and he is doing great. He loves to snuggle, he loves to ride in the car, go for walks and did I mention he loves to snuggle. He is not really too interested in toys, but is learning slowly that toys can be fun. Lucky is crate trained and enjoys having his own safe place, but does fine in the house. He is house trained and loves to run and play in the yard. His best friend is 80 pounds and they play and snuggle and Lucky has no problems letting him know when he has had enough. His favorite thing is snuggles on the coach. He is still nervous and sometimes acts like he feels he is going to get hit, so going slow and learning his body language is important. He loves to go on his weekly hikes and adventures during the week. He has never showed any kind of aggression and is great with all family members, kids and adults. Lucky enjoys running and playing with the other dogs, but only when I was there - so if any number of dogs he would be great if someone is there to make him feel safe - he needs to be socialized as much as possible to different environments, different people, different dogs to help him overcome his uncertainty and grow into the beautiful confident, happy dog that is waiting to come out. He would make a great companion for an active family, but they must have the patience, understanding and love to give him time to grow. Lucky needs a family that understands it can take up to 3 months for any dog to settle in and adjust, this poor sweet boy has been through so much - from whatever life he had before the shelter, then to a foster in Hawaii, then on a 2 day flight to the US, then to the rescue in the kennels, then in the house, then to a foster family - that is a LOT for any dog to deal with, let alone one that is skittish because of whatever trauma he has had in his life. The rescue buys food in bulk, by the truck load and there are a variety of brands and flavors. None of the food given is less than a 4* food rating. There have not been issues with eating any of the varying foods. It is important that you do your research on the ingredients and speak to your vet or a nutritionist on grain vs grain free! �'��You MUST understand that dogs need time to decompress and adapt to their new environment and home. It is a HUGE transition they make from the kill shelter, being vetted, on transport for 3 days and arriving in Maine where the temperature and such is very different to what they have only known. In rescue there is what is known as the '3 Point Rule' Days 1-3 your dog is stressed, anxious, confused as to where they are now. Weeks 1-3 your dog is adjusting, settling in, learning things. At the 3-month point, your dog understands they are home, and have built up a trusting relationship where they feel loved and secure.
