About Benson

Adoption Fee: $250
Belgian Malinois / Tibetan Mastiff
Age: Young Puppy
Sex: Male

Benson is a Malinois and Tibetan Mastiff mix. His dob is 4/1/22, and as of 10/6/22 he is 60+pounds. He's not done growing and vets have suggested he'll possibly be around 100+. He is a puppy, and he does what puppies do...chews everything in reach. And he's big, so he can reach a lot- ANYTHING left on the counter is fair game! He is very mouthy and has not learned that it's not ok to chew on his humans. He's reactive and you can not get much done while he's around. Benny was taken from his momma and bottled raised, so he missed that vital time where he would have learned how to interact appropriately from his momma and siblings. One of the trainers he worked with says he has not learned something called bite inhibition. Benny was given to my family by someone who was well-meaning and thought he would make a good gift. We weren't, and aren't, in a position to care for a dog physically, financially, or emotionally. My kids and I love him very much, and it is heart-breaking to know we can't take care of him. Ben needs someone who can invest their time in training him. He needs someone who can be consistent in every interaction with him. He always thinks it's play time. When you walk in the room with him, it's guaranteed he will jump on and bite you. He's a puppy and wants to play, but doesn't realize his play is too rough. I have tried an in-home certified behaviorist who uses positive reinforcement and I have sent him to a board and train that uses a balanced approach. He did well while with the trainers, and also for a little at home - but I'm constantly on the go and don't have much time to reinforce those commands he learned. And after all the training, we are back to him acting like he is in charge. So he needs someone who has the time to teach him what's appropriate and be consistent with their trainings and interactions. I'm a social worker and work over 40hrs a week and I am also obligated to other activities with my kids, so life is hectic and I'm always in a rush. It's not fair to Benson. One day, he will make a great family dog and companion, he just needs the right person to get him there. **IMPORTANT; I would like to add, Ben is very intense. He needs someone who is retired or has a schedule that allows them to be home with him during the day. It would not be suitable for the home to have kids, or possibly little old frail people. He does bite and jump. He would benefit from another dog companion in the home. I have to stress that, even though I don't believe he's being malicious, he does bite and doesn't understand why it's not ok. So I was told that if I did rehome him, he should only be placed with someone who fully understands his needs, how intense his behaviors are, and who's prepared to invest the time, love, and energy he needs. I was also told not to re-home him, that the most appropriate option is humane euthanasia. I am trying everything I can to prove those people wrong as I truly believe he can be a great companion- he just needs the right human. If you think you have what it takes to bring Ben to his full potential, please reach out with any question and to maybe set up a meet and greet. Thanks for taking the time to read about Benny!
