Name: Maisy Age: 7 years Breed: Mixed Chihuahua, Jack Russel Terrier, and unknown; small; 12# Sex: Female, spayed Location: Will County, IL Vet Information: Maisy is completely blind. She is spayed and microchipped. Maisy is up to date with vaccinations, and is heartworm negative. She had a dental exam and cleaning in September of 2020. Maisy has seen a veterinary ophthalmologist who believes there could have been some trauma to her eyes when she was a young pup or even in utero. She was born mostly blind. By the age of four months, Maisy developed glaucoma in both eyes. She was on a series of eye drops until she was nine months when the first enucleation occurred because the glaucoma got so bad. At twelve months, she had the second enucleation. Maisy had her anal glads removed, but she has no other health concerns. Owner Information: Maisy is an indoor dog with the run of the house. She is housebroken and leash trained. She had some training at PetSmart when she was about a year old, and Maisy knows cues for sit, down, lay, shake, and up! She's a nervous girl, but Maisy is good with women and teenagers. Maisy has been with her female owner her entire life, but she's only been with her male owner part of the time. She gets along ok with most men, but not as much with her current male owner, which her female owner feels is because he often doesn't have patience with Maisy. Maisy generally prefers women. Maisy gets along with male and female dogs. She currently lives with a Lab/Hound mix. They get along fine and play throughout the day together. Maisy has been with her current owner for about seven years, and she feels that Maisy adapts well to new situations and surroundings despite being blind due to the fact that she's moved with her owner four times and has done very well. She is looking to rehome Maisy due to a chance in living circumstances and would prefer to rehome Maisy locally in the area in which they live, if possible. Maisy has some issues with resource guarding of food as well as other objects that she feels possessive of. She has bitten both her male and female owners a couple of times and has broken skin on both of them. This was during the time that they were learning about resource guarding, and her owner feels that they were 'warning' bites. Her owners have learned how to diffuse situations, and they've spoken with behavioral vet specialists and trainers. None of the bites required medical attention. They are all classified as Level 2 on the Dunbar Bite Scale. A Level 2 bite is defined as skin-contact by teeth but not skin-puncture. However, there may be skin nicks (less than one tenth of an inch deep) and slight bleeding caused by forward or lateral movement of teeth against skin, but no vertical punctures.
