About Aengus Mac Cool

Border Collie
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Aengus' history is unknown. I suspect he was used for breeding. He was found wandering the farms in the Willamette Valley. He was in a county shelter for 4 months, while there, he was starved and emaciated, and covered in feces, urine and sores. I had just rescued an Aussalier whose owner passed away, but I could not leave Aengus in that place. He knew no commands, would not let me touch his feet, and was super anxious about food. After 8 months, Aengus lets me clean and brush him. He is still crazy anxious and aggressive about food. He gets along with dogs that don't challenge him but he gets aggressive if they push him. He has bit 2 people out of fear only. He has never tried to bite my 8 year old grandson and loves to play ball with him. He acts aggressive when new people approach, but I ask him if he wants to say hi and then he glues himself to them. He has learned many commands including leave it, come, load up, and he understands sentences. He is slow to learn lie down, sit and stay, though he will do them. He has had instant recall when I called him off other dogs or was worried about him approaching people. He is terrified of large animals and barks like crazy at them. (We live on a farm with cows and alpacas.) I have to rehome him because we already have dogs and cats. He is great with cats, even kittens, and chickens. The cats rub against him and the kittens play around him. The chickens and roosters all just forage right where he plays ball and none of them has been attacked. He is territorial about his house and car. He is a beautiful, loving, loyal dog who just needs to be with someone who as experience with traumatized border collies. I love this dog and it breaks my heart to let go of him, but my aussalier is also territorial and she keeps engaging him and then gets hurt. He tries to avoid her but he can't always do that. I will be very picky about who gets this dog. If you have no experience with traumatized dogs then you should not take this dog on. I don't want him to go through anymore trauma or be an experiment for someone who thinks they know what they are doing when they don't. This dog needs and deserves to be the only dog, and to be in an environment where he can run and play. He is not a couch dog. He also deserves the opportunity to be retrained by an expert so that he can live a normal life. I know that he has the potential to be a phenomenal dog. For the right person, he will be a tremendous life partner.
