He's gained some weight and his hair is growing in! Name: Gizmo Age: 11 or 12 years old Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Mix, 5.6 pounds, miniature Sex: Male, neutered Location: Franklin County, Ohio Vet Information: Gizmo's Good Samaritan has done much to help Gizmo become healthy. He was neutered, microchipped, brought up to date on vaccines, and had a negative heartworm test. The cause for Gizmo's blindness is cataracts according to his vet. His eyes are white and developing brown spots on them, and he has just been to the vet. According to the vet, Gizmo's right eye looks like the lens is moving more than the left, due to pressure. Both eyes will eventually need to be removed as he is totally blind. Although his Good Samaritan fears that the pressure could cause pain, she says that the little guy never acts like he is in pain. Gizmo's blood work was normal. When found, Gizmo was undernourished and had a tick-borne Anaplasmosis, which was treated with antibiotics. The only four teeth that he had left were black and rotted. They have been removed and so he has no teeth. His lower jaw had been broken at some point, most likely due to periodontal disease, according to the vet. It is possible that he will need a wire or some work done on his jaw, but he seems to do fine as he is. His hair is now growing back in. He is gaining weight and has more energy. Owner Information: Gizmo is currently living with a Good Samaritan who took him in when he was abandoned in her neighborhood recently. After searching extensively for his former owner, Gizmo's Good Samaritan ensured that he was on the way back to good health. Gizmo is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house. He is housebroken and leash trained. He is very vocal when he needs to go to the bathroom, so he knows that but no other cues. Gizmo is an outgoing little guy who is good with women and female dogs. He hasn't been around men very much but was fine with a male veterinarian. He lives with two other, larger dogs and two cats. Gizmo really got excited when one of the cats stopped to smell him. He has no teeth and weighs less than half her weight. He gummed her a little bit, and she hissed at him. He has decided to behave better with her. He is not possessive with treats, food, or toys. Gizmo is pretty mellow and just carefully wanders around a bit. He has mapped out the back yard and knows where he can trot, and where to go more carefully. He seems pretty unbothered by almost everything except maybe sudden loud noises, as one would expect. The back storm door banged shut a couple of times, and he cringed away and stiffened up. But that was the only reaction of note. His Good Samaritan would like you to know: 'He seems to have lost his special person but is a sweet natured, easy-going little guy. He is more people, less dog oriented but seems to enjoy joining in when other dogs decide to bark. He loves to roll in the warm grass, or sleep on a lap.' Does anyone have room for sweet Gizmo? **Owner Surrender Disclaimer: These are blind and visually impaired dogs who are living in homes, but their owners can no longer keep them.
