About Maverick Von Marvelous

Adoption Fee: $350
German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Hi, my name is Maverick! I'm a handsome and tall young boy around 2.5 years old, weighing about 85 lbs. I was found as a stray in Washington County, Oregon with no known previous history. I was rescued from the Bonnie Hayes Animal Shelter in Hillsboro. I'm currently located in Wilsonville with my foster dad and his female shepherd. I love to play with my foster sister, and with toys and especially the ball. I'm very treat oriented and love to learn. I have excellent recall. I know all my basic commands, i.e. sit, down, stay, here, shake, wait, up, off, heal, leave it, bring it etc. I love to learn and have a great ability to pay attention to my handler. I am leash trained, house trained, and crate trained. I have several other doggy friends but I need slow introductions at first. Doggy day care is not for me at this time. I do go on neighborhood walks every day, but we purposely avoid other walkers and dogs along the way. We simply cross the street. I don't seem to mind strangers or their pets at all when they are not too close. I ignore noisy delivery trucks, bikes, cars, and street sounds or anything I'm told to 'leave it.' I spend time at my trainers home, and at the rescuers home besides my foster dad's. I'd like to find a home with a big fenced back yard or property near my foster home now because I come with local training to help me adjust to my new home environment. My certified dog trainer in Lake Oswego is willing to work with me and my new owner at no charge for as long as it takes to make me the best dog. Continuing my training is very important. I need to be placed in a relaxed and quiet home environment with no children and with owners that have had German Shepherd experience within the last 5 years. I can be an only dog or have a shepherd or other large breed sister. I have been around another small dog (male terrier) without trouble. I have not shown any food or toy aggression in the past. I live to play fetch and will walk around with a ball in my mouth. I am an indoor house dog that needs to be with my people. A stay-at-home or work-from-home adopter is a must. Quite frankly, I am a big baby, and I hate to be alone. I do have separation anxiety and take fluoxetine on a daily basis which helps reduce my anxiety. My rescue organization will pay for my first 24 months after my adoption for these medications which are not expensive (about .15 per pill/3 day.) I easily take these meds in my food or in a cheese treat. I am not a property dog or yard ornament to be left outside alone and ignored. I bond with my owner and am not a runaway type of guy. I am very affectionate with my owners and handlers. I am neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on all my vaccines and shots. I'm a very healthy boy. I am a loyal dog and feel the need to bark at scary new things and new people I'm not familiar with. Because of that, I am not your everyday family type of dog. I need a very experienced handler. I am a high-drive working dog that loves to play find and seek games and fetch the ball regularly. I am extremely intelligent and would make a great personal protection dog or some sort of a search and retrieve dog. I must be with someone who is willing to keep my training up and offer me their love, dedication and time. In return, I will be the most devoted, loving, cuddly big boy shepherd, one could ever imagine. Is this you? I hope so! RECAP: Pros: Young, healthy, working dog personality, easy to train, smart, loyal, protective, strong desire to please, attentive to handler, knows many commands, loves to train, excellent recall, leash/house/crate trained, affectionate, non-destructive, could be a great scent dog for tracking and search teams, has done some agility work, is neutered, microchipped & up to date with all shots, comes with additional training and 2 years of fluoxetine if continued use is needed. (In time, with proper handling and ownership, he may be trained out of this anxiety. He has already made great progress.) Cons: Maverick has 'stranger danger'--barks at strangers, he needs slow introductions to new people and pets, has separation anxiety--needs to be with an experienced owner that stays at or works from home, he needs to be placed in a relaxed home (no apartments) with a fenced yard, no children, no cats, and he should not go to dog parks at this time, Maverick's continued training is a must. Maverick will come with his collar, leash, harness, crate, bed, toys, treats, a large bag of dry dog food and a free training package from his certified dog trainer.
