Have you read, re-read, and watched 'Where the Red Fern Grows' and always wanted to work with your own coonhound? Steve is the guy for you! This handsome boy is Steve, a 2 year old, 55 pound coonhound mix. Steve is a full package: house trained, crate trained, and master of basic obedience. He can reliably be left home alone out of the crate and your house will not be in danger of destruction. At night, Steve sleeps in his crate, or respectfully at the foot of the bed. Steve is mellow and sweet with his family and trusted friends in his inner circle. Steve loves his own people, however when visitors are enroute - whether they be your best friend from school, your electrician, or extended family, Steve will need to retire to his own space away from the action. This can be in his crate, where he is quite comfortable, or a room of his own. Once your visitors have left, Steve will be happy to help with clean-up duty. Steve attends doggy daycare 2 days a week and does great there. He does not currently live with other pets, but would likely be fine living in a home with another dog his size and similar play style. Steve does well on walks, and runs on-leash, however, he can be reactive when he sees another dog. With consistent boundaries and training, Steve should be able to walk past other dogs calmly. A fenced in yard is a must for this beautiful boy as he can break the boundaries of an invisible fence. It will also allow him the space to do one of his favorite things - run around! Steve would be most successful in a quiet home without frequent visitors. He has lived with kids, but has become protective of them so older children - teens or young adults - would be best. Steve has a high prey drive and should not be in a home with a cat. With an experienced dog person, consistent boundaries, continued training with a professional, an opportunity for exercise, and a family who loves to learn together, Steve will blossom like a red fern. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label. We expect that all adopted dogs will enroll in a formal dog training class with their new owners. Obedience and training classes are an excellent way to learn more about your newly adopted dog, gain handling and training experience, and improve your relationship with your pet.
