About Gemma

Adoption Fee: $600
Australian Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Gemma is two years old and 6 months. She is almost 30 pounds. She is a pure bread AKC miniature American Australian Shepherd. She has one gleaming blue eye. Her name Gemma means Gem in italian. She does well with many people that are adults. She is very socialized. She is healthy but she does not eat any meat because she cannot digest it. She only can digest hydrolyzed fish proteins and so she has a special food. Her food is about $32 a month. She gets it from an imported company from Italy and chewie.com distributed this food import made in Italy and so does Amazon. The veterinarian will try to sell a prescription $100 bag of food and it's the same ingredients. We use the brand Forza10. Her treats must be very plain maybe just made only with bananas and peanut butter etc. She can have very limited snacks like a carrot or half of a little apple slice. With this diet she does very very well and has very normal bowel movements. She also loves dogs, all dogs. She's a very sweet cuddly loving dog. She does not do well with kids or teens who can become overwhelming or try to overstimulate her and when provoked. If she gets over stimuli she bites. She does well with children only as long as there's constant adult supervision the entire time. Even if you step away for a few seconds into another room and if the kids get too rowdy and begin to annoy her she has a tendency to bite. Gemma is very very talented in agility sports as she can jump very high and she really rarely of ever misses the ball or whatever plush toy you were throwing up in the air. she will also do flips in the air and she plays soccer. She's very energetic and still acts very much like a puppy. She is well trained and crate trained. She could be left home for up to 5 to 8 hours without any issues as long as there's plenty of food and water and usually the TV is left on so she hears music or a movie playing. She doesn't bark. She has howled on occasion and it's a beautiful song. She normally is only left home for several hours maybe twice or three days a week at most. She also loves her daily walks. She's very very playful. But she has a sensory to loud sounds coming from squeals of children or teens from their fast-paced movements and tends to not trust their actions. she doesn't understand what's going on and she thinks they are going to hurt her or hurt someone else in the home. she's very protective of her owners and will guard them. She will bark at strangers but calms down when she feels that they are OK and that you are talking to them and are okay with them. She always ends up warming up to them and will roll onto her belly and want a belly rub each time. Sometimes she will bark at people to demand it if they're not giving her attention or a belly rub. SHe is crate trained and loves to sleep in it all night. She will go in it herself even if the door is left open. She knows many commands and understands many words and knows many tricks. She loves to gives kisses and usually won't stop because she is just very very loving. She definitely a guard dog and protector of her family. She will make a presence with her bark to strangers. She sounds like a full size Australian Shepherd when she barks to warn you of strangers. She does warm up. If she sees them approaching with unknown objects in their hands like a vacuum she tends to be more defensive and barks more, there's times she won't bark at any stranger depending which direction they were walking if towards her or the family etc. And at night she will be more on the guard if she sees people in the dark in a parking lot etc.
