About Fiver

Border Collie / Australian Cattle Dog
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

EDIT 5/13/22: currently in Tigard/Portland area, can travel. Fiver is a lean mean running machine; extremely confident, friendly, bold, energetic, and ready for anything. I adopted him as a project dog in April 2021 from the Rohnert city park shelter as a Texas transfer. He's a reformed model citizen ready for finishing school with his forever home. Currently a great age to transfer cues and acclimate to a new handler's criteria. On track towards being a calm, reliable adult dog who thrives on adventuring with his handler. Needs another six months of puppy management until he hits the two year mark to solidify his training. Prone to chaotic excitability and play biting when over aroused, be ready to bring your treat bag and toys on outings and he can breeze through. Handler must recognize he spent his first four months isolated and under stimulated in the city shelter and needs support to be a good boy. If you're in search of a highly intelligent, intense, rugged, all adventure outdoor dog Fiver is your boy. He's on board a work to eat program, clicker & ecollar trained, has understanding around loose leash walking, heeling, stay, wait at thresholds, crating, etc. Comfortable around small and large fenced livestock (we lived with goats, guardian dogs, a donkey, chickens, and pigs). Has been exposed to calm cats at a distance, wants to chase if they run. Acclimated to spending the majority of his day outside. House broken and well mannered when exercised but not yet trusted alone loose in the house, he is use to an indoor crate and fenced backyard. He's a busy little man and will find something to do if you don't direct him. A total rock star in the car, so easy to bring around for long trips and errand runs. AMAZING cycling buddy; we regularly cycle a mile or three for daily exercise as well as go on 16 mile adventure outings around town and country. Our favourite activities together are cycling, training in retail stores, jogging, long city walks, nature hiking, food foraging games, training games, and fetch/tug. I think Fiver would flourish in a home that has daily access to semi private off leash areas/dog proof backyard, time to dedicate towards exercising him physically and mentally twice a day, and confidence in their high drive dog handling skills. He would love an older doggy mentor to show him how it's done but is happy solo. His handler should be physically sturdy and able to tolerate 50lbs of dog hurtling full speed 20mph at you (requires management around children or frail adults, can inadvertently knock them over). He's super friendly with every human and dog we've encountered but his enthusiasm can be overwhelming- he loves to rough house. Be ready to work on obtaining his focus under distracting conditions, puppy mouthing, overexciting greetings with new people, and a boundless reserve of energy. A phone call and at least one in-person visit would be responsible in order to make sure he's going to the right home and the humans know what they're getting into.
