About Obi

Australian Cattle Dog / Black and Tan Coonhound
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Look at that face%BD'%BD|I mean come on! That face has probably received more kisses than any dog on the planet. Obi is an 11 month old rescue. We adopted him when he was 8 weeks old. His pregnant Mama was rescued from a shelter down South right before she had her puppies. He is about 30% Australian Cattle Dog, 20% American Leopard Hound, and then about 5-10% of everything else. He weighs 47 pounds and has a gorgeous short glossy coat similar to a Lab. Obi is very smart. I know all dog parents think their dog is the smartest, but our trainer said this the first time she met him as a baby. He also has a great nose and we have done Nosework classes with him. He really excelled. He is 100% housebroken. He goes to the door and asks to be let out as needed. He also knows all of the other expected commands. He is very funny. When he wants to play he will bring a ball and drop it at your feet. When playing with a ball he will lay down if he needs a rest. If you approach to get the ball, he puts one paw on top of it to signal he is not ready for it to be taken. He LOVES playing with other dogs. He does great in the dog park and is sweetly social with any dog we meet on walks. (The only exception is German Shepherds. He is wary of them since he got tumbled by a large adult male a few months ago.) Obi is affectionate when he is in the mood. He gives great kisses. But when he is not in the mood he prefers to be left alone. We say he is moody which I think is an accurate description. He retreats to his crate when he needs some quiet time. He prefers to sleep in (until about 8am-9am) and often will not come out of his crate to greet us when we come downstairs. We love Obi very much. We are devastated, but we need to look for a new home for him. . He would be happiest in a quiet home, not one that is constantly rocking and rolling like ours. He would do best in a home without children. Obi has some resource and house-guarding tendencies that will need to be managed, and he needs slow, managed introductions to new people in the home. Obi has on several occasions nipped visitors to our home before we understood these tendencies and did not properly manage introductions. We no longer have people come over because it is too stressful. Obi is a dog that is beyond our skill level and not a good match for a chaotic home with young children. We have worked with our trainer and she thinks the behaviors could be much better controlled with training and handling by an experienced dog person. Obi would be an amazing working dog. He loves to be outdoors and will just sit on the grass and bask in the sun. Obi has always done well with other dogs, and would enjoy the company of a canine brother or sister. If you are excited by the idea of a whip-smart, independent, beautiful and funny dog, please consider meeting Obi.
