About Val

Adoption Fee: $250
German Shepherd / Border Collie
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

First, look at Val's picture and video. Isn't she stunning? (Excuse the dirt on her nose in some pics, she helped her fur sister go after a few moles in her foster Mom's backyard.) Obviously beautiful, Val is a 38-40 lb., fun loving, high energy, super affectionate, Shepherd/Border Collie mix (we think), who is looking for a special person to call her own. She loves to follow her human everywhere and prefers to be with them almost constantly. Val learns quickly and appears to be very smart, eager to please, and loves learning new things. Her foster Mom is working with her on basic commands like sit, stay, down, leash walking, and recall and she's closing those gaps very rapidly. She loves 'working' her sets and playing for hours on end - clearly happiest when engaged in activities which provide her mental and physical workouts. Her foster Mom thinks she would be a superb candidate for agility training and/or working sheep/goats on a farm. She just needs someone experienced with her type of dog, willing and able to provide the right environment and training, and who will love her to the moon and back! Val gets along very well with the other dogs in her foster Mom's home, big and little, male and female. She does not want to dominate, just play, play, play! She has not been cat-tested but her foster Mom thinks the urge to herd would be over-powering and she'd likely get scratched up trying that. Herding the other dogs, and sometimes humans, is her favorite sport, right behind playing any type of ball; she has fallen in love with the balls. She's starting to pick up squeaky toys and carries them around. She also has never met a human stranger, as long as they are friendly and her foster Mom is there for support. Val's confidence will grow with time and the right support. Val is house and crate-trained, is quickly learning new skills and how to live in a house with humans. She sleeps in her crate quietly at night but does not like to be crated in the daytime - she's got too many balls to chase! She is turning out to be an excellent watchdog, too, alerting her foster Mom to any person or other animal coming on their property and appropriately so. She is highly alert and aware of her environment at all times. Because of her breed, intelligence, and athleticism, Val has some specific needs to be happy and safe: She needs an owner who is experienced with herding dogs and understands their needs for mental and physical activities. Because of her strong herding instinct, Val is not recommended for a home with small children or elderly adults. A large, fenced back-yard with at least a 6-ft. high fence is required as she can jump very high without the need for a running start - her legs are like springs. Val is not an apartment kind of dog and would be miserable in that environment and make her human miserable as well. Leaving her crated for long hours while her human is at work would be torture for her. She gets very frustrated and barks/whines loudly if crated during the daytime for any length of time. Her brains, athleticism and sweetness make her an ideal companion and a lifetime source of joy for someone willing who is athletic, has energy and wants to give her a job to do! She is a 2 year old, Shepherd mix. As part of Val's $250 adoption fee, she is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and current on her monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives.
