About Rocky

Adoption Fee: $200
Rat Terrier
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

If eyes could speak, Rocky's deep soulful eyes could probably fill a book. Rocky was turned into a shelter by a relative of his elderly owner, who had been hospitalized with COVID-19. In the shelter, his mental health deteriorated into aggressive behavior, earning the approximately 9-year-old rat terrier a 'rescue only' label and a place on the euthanasia list. However, a shelter worker saw a look in Rocky's eyes that told her to contact New Rattitude instead. Now after several months in foster care, veterinary attention to confirm that a heart murmur would not require meds, and surgery to remove a benign tumor, Rocky's eyes still speak volumes. And the rest of him has much to say too! His body whirls in circles to tell you he's delighted you asked if he'd like to go out. His hindquarters curve downward to say he's feeling uncertain. Rocky's vocal cords command the greatest attention with a prodigious bark that would make him an excellent alert dog for a single person. The word SINGLE is key, for Rocky has eyes for one person alone. He might willingly snuggle with other family members, but if they stand or move about, they'll receive a loud admonishment. If they persist, he may nip at a hand or pants leg to add emphasis. If they move slowly, speak gently, and offer treats, Rocky might be sociable for a while. He's becoming a model patient at the vet's office, where everyone respects his anxiety. He's also learning to love his crate by eating meals and spending quiet time there with the goal of using it as his personal 'safe space.' Rocky is house-trained, tolerant of other dogs his size, and respectful of their space and food though not inclined to play. (Cats would find his bark annoying.) He loves squeaky toys and walking on leash, provided you choose a quiet time with few distractions and allow plenty of sniffs along the way. He'd make a great companion to someone who is home most of the time and who would enjoy being the center of the universe for an eager-to-please, faithful fellow. Applicants should live within reasonable driving distance of the metro DC area to experience personally Rocky's booming bark and to allow multiple visits for a successful transition to his new home. ------------------------------------------------------ IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING ROCKY, please go to New Rattitude's website at https://newrattitude.org/adopt/, where there is detailed information and a link to our adoption application.
