Her owners write, 'Mabel's blindness has been challenging for us to navigate since we first picked her up nearly 5 years ago. We have been able to work through her fear and anxiety in controlled environments (like our home) to some extent, but we just had a baby and we are very concerned about her reactions to loud noises and unexpected quick movements from our child as she grows up. Mabel has nipped when she is nervous/scared and wants to control a situation...' Name: Mabel Age: Will be 5 years in May 2022 Breed: Aussie Mix Sex: Female (confirmed spayed) Location: Madison County, AL Vet Info: Mabel is confirmed spayed. She is up to date on her vaccines, with her next rabies vaccine due on July 25, 2024. Mabel was tested for heartworm on 11/3/2021 and was negative. She weighs about 40 - 45 pounds. Mabel is also on Prozac and Xanax as needed. Her owners tell us, 'we have recently spoken with our vet who has prescribed Prozac and Xanax (as needed) to help reduce her anxiety. Our home is a somewhat stressful environment for Mabel as we live on a main road (constant road noise) and we have only recently realized how big of a difference a quiet environment has made on her anxiety.' Mabel is completely blind in one eye and partially blind in the other. Her owners tell us she has been this way since birth as she is a double-merle Aussie. Dog Info: Mabel is an indoor dog with run of the house. She is housebroken and leash trained. She's a smart little girl! Mabel knows several commands including, Sit, Down, Place, Off, Shake, Heel, and Roll Over. She also spent two weeks at a board and train. Mabel is described as nervous. Her owners tell us she's good with men, women, and teenagers, but a home with younger children is not recommended. She is also good with male and female dogs and cats, and has lived with a cat her whole life. Mabel is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, but she has nipped and has growled when on walks. Her owners gave us more information: 'Mabel has been demonstrating leash aggression and will occasionally growl and pull toward another dog or person if she can smell/hear them, but not see them.... Mabel has nipped several times related to her separation anxiety. This usually happens when we were walking out the door and she would try to 'grab' us to keep us from leaving. Since then, we have been crating her when we leave and this hasn't continued. There was one incident where Mabel bit and broke skin. My grandfather fell and his hand landed right next to Mabel's face, the sudden loud movement scared her and she bit his hand.' Mabel's owners feel she adapts well to new situations that are relatively calm and quiet. She does not do well with stressors like cars and bikes in close proximity. Her owners also shared extra information about her health: 'Mabel is a bit of a picky eater and will generally graze throughout the day unless she is staying with another dog, and then she will eat her entire portion in one sitting. At home where we only have her she will occasionally go longer than we like between meals because she doesn't seem motivated to eat.' Mabel's owners want us to know what a special girl she is! 'Mabel is the most loving and loyal dog I have ever met. She loves to cuddle and will make a great addition to a home without young kids or noise stressors.'
