About Leo

Adoption Fee: $50
Border Collie / German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Leo is a 3.5 year old border collie mix. He currently lives in his original home with myself and my husband and our one year old son. Since Leo was 1 year old he started showing aggression and anxiety over his kennel/crate. He has been to the vet several time to check his blood work and make sure that he is physically ok. Every time he has been to the vet he has been ruled healthy. We contacted a behaviorist and she thinks that Leo has boundary aggression and resource guarding aggression. My husband and I are extremely un-equipped to handle a dog like this even though Leo is a part of our family. We can't risk the physically safety of our family because of our incapability to properly train Leo and keep everyone safe. He is a sweetheart once he trusts you, which can take a long time. Leo particularly favors women over men, and never had an issue with children because he was always separated from them and never had a chance because of his bite history. He currently does not receive enough one on one attention/exercise because my husband and I are slightly afraid of him. He has had five bites total and two were towards my husband and I. He is an extremely intelligent dog and is trained with basic commands and house trained. He LOVES being outside and chewing on sticks. I think a dog like him needs a job to do everyday because he can get really bored. He has other anxious/bored tendencies like licking the grout obsessively when he is anxious. Leo has SO much potential and my husband and I are failing him by not giving him what he needs. He is getting muzzle trained by myself but it is a long process for him to trust the muzzle. We also have a male 2 year old golden retriever that Leo is buddies with. They play indoors but not outside because Leo doesn't understand how to play correctly and all he does is herd/hump the other dog. He definitely needs someone who is confident in how to handle a dog that is dominant. We love Leo so much and want to give him the best chance possible.
