About Pongo

Saint Bernard
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

**URGENT** Jacksonville NC 8 year old male Not neutered Sadly we need to find another home for Pongo who has been renamed to Freddy. He's been posted on Rescueme as well. Full story: JEALOUS, PROTECTIVE, AND SEPARATION ANXIETY. NEEDS TO BE WITH SOMEONE WHO IS HOME ALL DAY. NO KIDS NO OTHER ANIMALS. Over a month ago I was able to get the 8 year old pure Saint Bernard Pongo out of a rough situation. I dont want to bash the previous owners, but its clear he wasn't given some basic necessities. My intention was to get him to avoid him being put down at a shelter. I had Pongo just a couple weeks and got him much needed vet care. He weighed in at 135, and needs to gain weight. He still has teeth work to be done, he will need broken teeth removed. He had fleas prior to me getting him so his skin and fur are healing. He had ingrown nails, which one did damage to his pad, but has been cleaned and doesnt bother him now. Once his skin is cleared he will be able to be scheduled to be neutered if the vet recommends it's OK. After a couple weeks he began showing serious jealousy and is very protective of the person he clings to. He didn't like my other two giant breed dogs getting any attention or getting close to me and went after the paws of my Newfoundland, but didn't get her. With him being 8, he's not quick. I was able to fina a family that was believed to be a good fit. They have experience with rescuing giant breeds and transforming neglected dogs. They changed his name to Freddy, but he will still respond to Pongo. After a few weeks there he began the same behavior of being overly protective of the one who takes care of him. He grabbed a stuff animal that belonged to one of the children, that wasn't a toy, and the kid tried to grab it and he snapped at her. The mother went to see what was wrong and he snapped at her too. No harm was done, but the intent was there. He needs to be with someone who will be with him all day. He has separation anxiety and scratches at doors and chew when you're away. There need to be no children and no other animals. He just has to find the right fit. He is grieving his first owner who passed of cancer, and that man's son couldn't keep him. He wasn't given a structure or any training. We don't want this guy to be put down. He deserves to live out his last few years in peace.
