Sophie is a sweet 18 month old cattle dog/Australian Sheppard. Her former owner obviously spent time training her -- she will sit, lay down, get down and come (most of the time), walks fairly well on a leash, and is apparently potty trained (she is learning how to tell us she needs to go outside) and seems to be good with cats. We live on acreage, we're home most of the time, and have 2 other high energy dogs, so we thought it would be a good fit. We rescued Sophie recently (she was a stray) and she is adapting well to our family life --- but, although we've come to love this little dog, she isn't a good fit with our 2 Border Collies. They are ages 6-7, healthy and active, however, Sophie does what cattle dogs do, and nips at their heels... all the time. Our dogs now try to hide from her or sit down when she approaches. I don't want to return her to the local shelter because I feel the average adopter will have the same issue. That nipping, even playfully, isn't going to be something we will be able to 'train' out of her -- and she's a cattle dog -- that's one of traits valued in the breed, right? Also, since we don't know her background, we don't know why she doesn't seem to be fond of men. Now she's warming up to my husband, but interacting with men seems to be something she will need TLC to gain trust. Sophie will make a wonderful family member for someone who understands and wants those cattle dog traits. It's sad we can't provide that, but we love her enough to seek a home where she can thrive.
