Please know that we will ask for a vet reference. Zava's owners are expecting a baby and need to re home Zava because he has bitten them on more than one occasion since becoming blind. Name: Zava Age:%A0 %A0 15 year old Breed: Poodle Sex:%A0 17# Male (neutered - per owner) Location:%A0 Middlesex County, MA Vet Information: Current on vaccines and HW negative (per owner). Owner report: 'We have an incredibly loving 15-year old poodle in almost perfect health (Zava) for whom we need to find a new home. When we first adopted him about 1.5 years ago, he had just transitioned to completely blind, and was extremely agitated. Due to our inexperience with traumatized dogs, we were plagued with constant bites. These bites varied in severity, but the worst occurred about 6 months ago while trying to move Zava out of the car; this was an incident where both my arm and hand were severely punctured, and required significant emergency room followup. I would want in any way to understate the danger that Zava poses to someone inexperienced with traumatized dogs. He does, however, given warning before bites: he stiffens and sometimes growls. He is most reactive in the evening when waking up from a nap. During his time with us, he was not sedated, but a vet has only now recommended gabapentin, a mild sedative and pain reliever that well could have prevented many of the bites we endured. Generally, Zava has gotten along well with our roommate's dog (a gentle Irish wolfhound) after a few run-ins where, not knowing he was blind, the wolfhound stepped on him and they tussled. Zava has not bitten another dog to our knowledge and now abides amicably with the dog housemate. We would not be giving up Zava under any circumstances except that we are now expecting a baby, and given the severity and unpredictability of Zava's bites, it would be impossible for us to keep in the same home. Please understand the severity of danger that Zava poses, but also the incredible do-anything-to-survive spirit that he expresses. With me, his primary owner, he loves to cuddle, and would prefer to stay in my lap all day. With my husband, he deigns to allow him to harness and walk him.' Zava is an indoor dog with the run of the house. He is house broken and leash trained. According to the owner Zava 'Responds to name, whistles, and claps but does not have other commands; learns the layout of rooms quickly and can walk upstairs but falls downstairs if they're not gated; loves to be bathed and tolerates grooming.' Zava is said to be good with adult women however Zava has shown aggression towards humans and bit his owners (male and female) on more than one occasion. Zava would not do well with young children. 'Zava complains if another animal tries to eat his food (growls). Does not interact with other dogs while on walks. Has show significant aggression towards humans (many, many bites.)' Does anyone have room for Zava? **Owner Surrender Disclaimer: These are blind and visually impaired dogs who are living in homes, but their owners can no longer keep them.
