About Otis

Adoption Fee: $100
Foxhound mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Otis is a one-year-old, 70 lb. Harrier Hound. We rescued him from Biscoe, NC, in January 2021. My husband had witnessed several other stray dogs in the area attacking Otis, and we brought him home to protect him from getting injured, and because we noticed he was malnourished. Otis has received all his veterinary care at West Pine Animal Hospital. He was neutered and micro-chipped in May 2021 and is current on all vaccinations. He has been microchipped through Petlink. He still has all his due claws. He tested positive for Ehrlichiosis upon his first visit to the vet. Ehrlichiosis is a tick-bite-borne illness, but the vet said that Otis had not yet been adversely affected since we caught the disease early. He was treated with medication to prevent any complications in later life. He is not currently on any medication, but he takes Credelio chewable tablets for flea prevention and Heartguard Plus for heartworm and parasite prevention. We have not had any problems with either. His ribs appear to stick out on either side, but the vet stated that he is an ideal weight and determined he was born with 'floating ribs.' Floating ribs are anchored only to the spine and do not connect to the sternum or another rib. Floating ribs do not pose any health risk but may make the ribs more susceptible to injury. Otis loves playing outside and has tons of energy. He is accustomed to living indoors and getting two-three walks a day but would do best in an environment where he can spend most of his time outside. Otis loves hiking, running, and walking but does not like water or swimming. He has separation anxiety and becomes destructive when left alone inside the home. He walks well on a leash and knows the basic commands of 'sit' and 'stay' and 'shake.' Otis plays very well with other people, dogs, cats, and children, and we always receive positive feedback from the caregivers when we take him to doggy-daycare or boarding. He has always been allowed on the couch or bed, and he is very friendly and loves it when other animals or people lay or sit with him. Our neighborhood does not allow fences and we have a small yard, so Otis's time outside is limited, and he is always on a leash. We want him to have a home that will allow more outdoor space and freedom to run. I believe with a little patience and a big yard, he could be a great companion for life.
