About HANNA

Adoption Fee: $ 375
Saint Bernard / Mastiff
Age: Senior
Sex: Female

HANNA - 9-10 yrs. St. Bernard Mix, approx. 90lbs, spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations - I am in California! HANNA was surrendered by a couple living on the Pendleton Airbase in CA because the dog became too protective (against) the husband. True is though, too that Hanna lived only a couple of weeks with them and during that time they did not work with her to accept leadership by the people, nor did they know about the breed. ADR.org took her in but has not found the right home yet. We know that the right home is out there with a particular person. Reason why we think the right home might not have been found yet: People see dogs like Hanna as a classic example of a gentle giant, forgetting this breed does display sometimes fearfulness and possible territoriality leading them to believe the dog is 'aggressive'. Though Saint Bernards look like huge teddy bears, they are not pushovers to raise and train. Some dogs are willful and dominant (they want to be the boss) and will make you prove that you can make them do things. You must show them, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say. People mostly cannot handle this, or are not willing to follow through or simply are not consistent and firm enough. HANNA's guard dog roots are likely to manifest themselves when visitors come to the home. HANNA tends to be suspicious of strangers and protective of her family/human being and perceived territory So, while this can be a frightening to experience because of her breed's sheer bulk and power, HANNA immediately reacts to strong commands and will obey a strong 'pack leader'. So poor HANNA is still looking for a home. At the boarding place she has been bonding more with the dog trainer and owner, than with the female staff. But it all depends on each person's demeanor, knowledge of dog behavior. HANNA does not like stress, and negative, hectic energy. Most Saint Bernards are fine with other animals when raised with them. HANNA displays prey drive with cats, and she is selective with other dogs. So, a single animal home will be more suitable for her. HANNA can be visited @ the boarding facility in Palmdale,CA after a visit has been scheduled and arranged with the owners/staff.
