About Thor

Adoption Fee: $50
Black Mouth Cur
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

We're having to make a super hard decision, but our Black Mouth Cur has become aggressive toward our 9 year old son. He has chosen me (Mom) as 'his person' and will try to come between my child and I when my son approaches me. At first we thought it was over food because he does it in the kitchen, but my home office is in a bedroom and when my son (or my husband) comes into the room, Thor moves to me to 'protect' me from them. With my son, he will sometimes jump up, bark or growl, has been known to raise his hackles and will sometimes run at him, which is obviously scary. (With my husband, he has been known to growl, but he sees him as the 'pack leader' so is not as aggressive with him. We think he may be trying to challenge my son for pack rank). He is smart and learns very quickly, but his instinct is stronger than his want to please, with some things. He loves to chase anything that moves (flies, bees, butterflies, birds, rabbits), and in my opinion, he would benefit from a warmer climate where he could spend more of his time outside year-round. He seems to have more discipline issues in the winter when he has pent up energy because he can't get out & work some of it off 'chasing.' I also believe he would REALLY benefit from having a 'job' herding or hunting, as I also think he suffers from boredom, particularly in winter. He is approximately 1.5 years old, chipped and fixed. We got him at our local pound at about 5 months old and he had been to our vet with his prior owners due to a broken femur in his hind leg (fell out of the back of a truck at approximately 3 months old). It healed well and doesn't bother him now, though it may in older age. He is afraid of fireworks, thunder and other unfamiliar loud noises. I feed him higher fat sport dog food (Purina Pro Plan Sport 30/20) or else his ribs and hip bones show and he has had a bad reaction (awful rash on his belly) to the salmon protein of that brand just this past fall, but does fine with the chicken, turkey & beef. He is a handful, but we love him and would love to see him go to a good home, where he could be used for his breeds' purpose. Our hope is that by going through a rescue, we can find someone who has had this breed before (we personally have not, he is our first) and understands their specific needs. I don't suggest he live with cats (we have a timid cat whom he chases and 'trees' under beds, etc. A more aggressive cat may hold their own with him though), small dogs (we also have a Jack Russell Terrier and she is aggressive enough to play with him, but a timid dog would probably not do well with him, as he can be quite rough) and possibly children, though maybe his aggression to my son is specific because of his jealousy over me, I'm not sure. I don't know if he'd have the same reaction in a different family situation. He's a beautiful, faithful dog and it breaks my heart to have to re-home him, but I have never trusted him with my son entirely and it has gotten worse with age instead of better.
