About Otto

Adoption Fee: $500
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

He is 8 years old. He came to us from a breeder and he is AKC. He went to training and knows to sit stay and down. He even poops on command. He never has accidents in the home. He's extremely loving. He was born in July of 2013. He was fearful of many things and that has lessened over the years. There's a lot of behavior that in many ways got better because he does want to please my husband and I but there are other behaviors that he can't seem to help - no warning signs beforehand- he just gets in a zone and snaps- that are getting worse. We tried a behavioralist and positive reinforcement trainer but she wouldn't work with him. He became aggressive (and this has been labeled differently by different people- dominance, redirected aggression, fear aggression, etc. all depends on which specialist you believe) and hurt our shih-tzu pretty badly in 2019. Since then we worked with him more, but last month he not only went after our Chihuahua but went for his neck and shook him. He didn't growl or snark or show any sign before he did it. We tried Prozac which made him worse. We are at the point where he just can't be trusted with other animals. We have other dogs that live in fear of him. We manage the situation because we love him, but his quality of life is lessened by the steps we take, as well as theirs. No vet or trainer can guarantee he will ever get better and they say we must at all times keep him separate. Because he's a herding dog, this makes his life miserable as well because while he clearly on occasion he hurts one of the pack he also hates being separated where he can't manage to see us all. He goes to the groomers and they love him. He prefers women. Men sometimes scare him. We think he would be happiest in a home with land and no other animals. He is already an adult and he's in perfect health, and we want his life to be quality. He has never bit a person and he loves kids. He has a scary bark but it is just a bark. There's no bite toward humans behind it, or there hasn't been up until now. Then again, I never feared he would really try and hurt one of his dogs before now either so I've stopped saying 'he'd never'|'. It breaks our hearts to be doing this but if he can have a better life elsewhere then we would not want to keep him from that. It's clear our situation no longer is manageable or good for him or our other dogs. Otto is a really sweet boy and we adore him. We just want him to have a good loving animal free home where he can thrive
