About Ruger

Meet Ruger! Located in Millis, MA, this amazingly sweet boy is a 1-year old, 71-pound German Shepherd / Belgian Malinois mix (we have DNA results!). Ruger is calm while at home, but being young he likes to keep busy. He would love a backyard with a high fence and a very active person to be with. Ruger is excellent with scent work and would be a great agility or working dog. He is extremely loving with his people. He will come over to you and give you a big kiss on your face and lay his head on your lap and shoulder. He loves playing in the leaves and chasing tennis balls. He has lived with many dogs as a foster, but will be happiest as your favorite, one and only dog. He would love to be your couch buddy and snuggle in bed with you. He really enjoys the company of humans, but only 12-year olds and up for his home life. Once he gets to know new people, he quickly becomes their friend. Ruger recently began obedience training and sits like an expert. He is very food motivated and easy to train, however, since he loves food so much you will need to be careful because he will steal a sandwich right from your hands. Despite being a really sweet dog, Ruger needs work! He requires an experienced shepherd owner who knows how to keep a working breed busy and fulfilled. He will also need training to overcome reactivity to other dogs as well as continue his obedience training and socialization. He's a strong dog who pulls hard on the leash, especially when he sees other dogs or strangers, so his handler should also be strong. An ideal adopter would be someone who will take Ruger for frequent physical activities and adventures, such as hiking.
