About Ike

English Setter
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Handsome Ike is almost 4 years old and he is a typical active, birdie field English Setter. He was rescued from a hunting ranch when he didn't make the cut as a hunting dog. He was likely picked on by other dogs and trained in a harsh manner and he has some proximity sensitivity. He is a loving, goofy and sweet boy who loves to cuddle and just needs someone who will be patient and continue his house and manners training. Ike's lucky adopter is certain to be rewarded with a happy Setter full of smiles and hugs. Experience with high energy, high prey drive sporting dogs is preferred. He is not a candidate for hunting or a home without a physical fence. Ike will need a home with a very secure yard with at least 5 foot fences and features that are interesting enough and large enough to stretch out and run and entertain a self-exercising ES youngster that does between 20,000 - 50,000 steps a day on his Fi GPS collar. He is a graceful ES that seems to effortlessly glide through the air and he can turn on a dime. He likes to chew but is easy to redirect with toys inside and outside that are his to chew and play with. He is ok on leash and would love walks and an active person to call his own. As long as he is getting plenty of daily exercise, he will settle nicely inside. He enjoys furniture privileges at his foster home and wants the same in his adoptive home. He is anxious during thunderstorms and when he hears machinery like mowers and weed eaters in the distance. We think the noise is triggering a bad experience he must have had before rescue and he's getting better the longer he is in his foster home. Ike would not be a good match for a home with an alpha male dog or a home where other dogs are too physical with him. He was not properly socialized as a youngster and is learning doggy social skills in rescue. He prefers his space, something many of us can identify with. He would enjoy another high energy, similar size dog to work a yard with but he would probably be ok as an only dog as long as his person is a work/stay at home type. He is safe with indoor cats, but no outdoor cats because he thinks everything that moves outside should be hunted and he is very fast. Ike has never lived in a home with children and is a better candidate for an adult only home. Ike is neutered, up to date on vaccines and ready for his 'furever' home. He is in a foster home near San Antonio, TX.
