About Remington

Adoption Fee: $350
Bloodhound mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

*Remington's exact breed is unknown. We are guessing he is a hound/ridgeback mix but the shelter we rescued him from had him listed as a lab mix. Remington is absolutely gorgeous and will be available for adoption, later on this month. Remington is currently in Texas and will not be transported here to Oregon until he has been successfully pre-adopted. Remington is a healthy, young, 85 lb. dog who is up-to-date on vaccinations and will be fixed prior to leaving Texas. Remington just finished a 60 day board and train program in Texas where he worked on basic training like walking on a leash. He also worked on social skills and redirection from distractions. The right home for Remington would be the following: *with a person or persons who are experienced with dogs (not first time dog owners) *with a person or persons who has extensive knowledge of canine body language and canine behaviors and can easily detect when a dog is scarred, stressed, overaroused etc. *with a person or persons who has an active lifestyle and can provide plenty of canine enrichment and stimulation. *We believe Remington would pair well with someone who participates in plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking *a home with property where Remington can get plenty of physical exercise and have wide open spaces. Remington is known to have barrier frustration meaning he is fearful of small spaces so crating him for long periods of time or having him isolated in a small space will not work *Remington is not crate trained so one would need to be slowly introduced though we don't recommend one given his traumatic experiences in a kennel environment where he was mostly restrained. He is also a big dog and he deserves plenty of room and space to thrive **We will not consider applicants with the following criteria: -those who use aversive tools such as shock collars or choke chains -a home where he will be tethered for any portion of the day. We have not been able to analyze Remington's prey drive so it is unclear how he will do around small animals such as cats. No homes with young children please. It's not that we don't trust Remington, we don't trust children as they can be unpredictable and stress dogs out by not respecting their boundaries. Remington needs a stable environment where his people understand his threshold and don't stress him out or cause him to be uncomfortable on purpose. Remington's Past: Remington was a Texas stray, brought into the Houston city shelter after they received a call about a dog tied to a pole. Upon intake, he was terrified. It was clear that he didn't know what was happening to him and that he just wanted to get away from the shelter as quickly as possible. Since he wasn't going willingly with staff, they forcefully used a catch poll on him and sedated him in order to administer his vaccines. When they walked into his kennel, he would back into a corner and growl. He was giving off every indication that he was absolutely terrified. Because of the growling, they labeled him a 'danger to staff' and added him to the euthanasia list. Our team of volunteers were successfully able to save him in time and enrolled him into a board and train program where he could begin to decompress and work on social skills. We assume given the little we know about Remington, he was most likely a stray and did not have close contact with people or other dogs. He understandably had reservations around new people and other dogs. At the training ranch, he was quick to make friends with people and other dogs. It's important for anyone who considers adopting Remington that they understand his past experiences and how the trauma of being tied to a pole and left to die, then captured, then taken to a loud city shelter where he was handled by the staff aggressively, will have residual effects and take time for Remington to emotionally recover from. This city shelter in Texas is specifically notorious for animal neglect and mistreatment towards the dogs they take in. Remington is just one example of many where they have a blatant disregard for canine behavioral psychology and constantly push dogs past their fear threshold, causing the dog to react out of fear. Despite everything that Remington has been through, he does not have a bite history. He does a pretty good job letting us know when he is scarred by vocalizing such through growling or high pitch whining. As time has gone on, Remington has continued to impress us with his ability to trust humans and bond with them. We believe he will be an excellent, lifelong companion to the right person. We believe he will do well in a home with other dogs who aren't too intense. Slow introductions will be instrumental to the success of him pairing well with other resident dogs.
