About Selah

Adoption Fee: $50
Australian Cattle Dog / Australian Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Selah is a 2.5-year-old spayed female Blue Heeler/Australian Shepherd mix who is healthy and UTD on shots. When we arrived to meet Selah as a puppy, we realized that she was in a very bad situation. The people selling her were heavily mistreating their animals. They were beaten and the two puppies that were left were terrified and screaming when the owner of the mother attempted to pick them up. We knew that we could not leave her behind. Sadly, she has had a difficult life because of the trauma that she experienced in those early weeks. Selah is very sweet with people, and she is the most intelligent dog that we have worked with. When she was young, she learned how to hide things from me so that she could return later to enjoy them without me telling her no. Selah has had anxiety for most of her life. She is anxious about being left out and she stays glued to your side if you are around. She is very faithful, and she protects her family and her space. She loves to fetch and has an impressive jump. She will talk back to you if you tell her to back up while playing fetch. She is very vocal about her love for you and even howls at the moon sometimes. Selah needs a unique and capable owner to rescue her. In 2020 we began renting from someone that had cattle nearby. Selah enjoyed chasing the cows (she never nipped at them). Our landlord feared that the mothers would trample their calves and asked us to crate her. We purchased a large outdoor kennel area (we even covered it) and no matter what, we could not keep her in there because she always figured a way out. We had to crate her in a small crate. Despite the amount of time that we took her out of the crate to do things and spend time with our other animals, Selah's anxiety began to increase, and she began to show signs of aggression with other dogs and food. After some time, she got in a fight with our landlords' dogs, and he asked us to get rid of her. At this time, we asked some family to take her in. She began living with them while we tried to figure out what to do. During her time there, she got in a fight with their female dog and while attempting to pull her off, a family member was bit by her. We were once again asked to remove her. Selah has not displayed aggression with small children, or people unless they attempt to pull her off a dog fight. She has not had any issues with male dogs, only females. She was not aggressive until she was regularly crated. She does not display an aggression when she is alone with us. We take her out to do stuff and she does just fine. When she is in relatively close quarters with another dog (especially a female) she becomes threatened, jealous, and anxious and sometimes she responds with aggression. We have done everything that we can to try to keep her, because we love her so dearly and we had hoped to work with her to overcome her aggression. She is so sweet and faithful, and she misses us when we are gone. We have run out of options, and we are no longer able to keep her. Her ideal situation is to run around all day and come in at night for snuggles. She is not agility trained but due to her desire to work and her incredible intelligence, she would be great at it. Selah loves deeply and if you have left and returned, she will lay at your feet and cry with joy to see you again. Selah needs to be with someone that is equipped to work with her and can provide an environment that is free of the triggers that cause her to feel defensive or aggressive. We recently started her on [insert medication name] but not enough time has passed, nor is she in the right environment for us to really know if it is helping her with her anxiety. We are located in Southeast Kentucky.
