About Toby

Toby is a Lab/Aussie mix, and he is almost a year old. He is neutered and UTD on vaccinations. Toby's perfect home would include an active family that will take him on adventures. Toby needs a daily walk (30 mins) and play time (he loves running through streams/ponds, playing fetch, and wrestling with his furry foster siblings). Toby would be a great hiking/running pal. Toby has AMAZING recall! He's also 'all nose', and while I don't know much about scent work or hunting, I can totally picture him duck hunting with his favorite human. Toby needs a calm and assertive handler. He is full of puppy energy and needs an outlet for that. He's very smart, so we use a lot of 'brain game' toys like snuffle mats and stuffed kongs. Toby's foster home has young kids (ages 5 and 6), but he's still bouncy and rambunctious, so we recommend his forever home have dog-savvy or slightly older kids. A fenced in yard would be very nice, but it's not a deal breaker. Toby is completely house broken and has never damaged anything in the home - he knows the difference between dog toys and everything else. But he does like to chew out his energy, so will need enough fun things to chomp on. Toby does crate pretty well at night, but will sometimes 'complain' about it. A 45 second 'stare down' will get him to let out a big huff and then finally settle down. Toby knows basic commands and is learning good leash walking behavior. He even wears a backpack with little weights in it to wear him out! Probably because Toby has been bounced around a little in the last few months, he has some mild separation anxiety. Every day it gets better as he trusts more and gets comfortable, but his ideal home would probably have at least one person home most of the time. Toby is also learning that his rude barking and mouthing when he wants something will not get him what he wants - continued training in this area will be needed, but we've seen lots of progress in just 2 weeks. (I can appreciate that he's smart enough to have a 'conversation' with me, but there are 'nicer' ways to communicate. Like how he goes to the door and sits when he needs to relieve himself. So we know he's capable of good manners!) Toby is an absolute lovebug, totally adorable, funny, goofy, and sweet. With the right person to lead him, Toby is just amazing to be around.
